Appropriate Attire For Black Tie Optional Wedding
With black-tie optional weddings becoming more common these days, couples want to encourage their guests to dress up without having to buy or rent a tuxedo. This wedding dress code is one of the more generous options, as it recognizes that not everyone has the means and access to purchase what is usually required for black attire. But what is black tie optional and what are the boundaries of this particular dress code?

, which is pretty simple. We reached out to personal stylist Adriana Gonzalez-Ramirez to break down black-tie-optional attire, as well as the dos and don’ts of this somewhat ambiguous dress code.
“Black-tie dress-optional is the couple’s wish that everyone dress up,” Gonzalez-Ramirez said. “Men don’t have to wear tuxedos, but it’s a plus if they do.” Women should wear full-length dresses, but anyone wearing a cocktail dress is acceptable.
The black tie option is an intentionally ambiguous parameter that allows you to have a lot of flexibility when it comes to your ensemble. With this dress code, you can probably bet the wedding party will be wearing floor-length gowns and tuxedos, along with many immediate family members. Expect to see a mix of formal dresses from other guests – some will take the opportunity to dress up, while others will be happy to wear a more casual suit or midi dress.

Black-tie optional attire depends entirely on the season and venue. Most of these weddings take place after
“Men can wear wool and velvet on such occasions, as well as dark colors in the fall and winter,” says Gonzalez-Ramirez. “For dinner in the summer, an ivory jacket and black trousers are also a great choice.”
As for colors, all colors other than white and pastel are suitable. Embrace textures that can be dressed up or down with luxurious looking fabrics, patterns and accessories. A statement clutch or earrings with a midi dress can really elevate your look from chic cocktail to black tie. Mid-length or floor-length gowns are ideal, but if you’re worried about looking swallowed by the fabric, look for something with a slit. It helps elongate a petite frame and as a bonus makes it much easier to get on the dance floor.
“For women, warm-weather prints and bright colors they don’t wear,” says the stylist. “I also like to look at the wedding venue before [the wedding] to match the atmosphere of the setting.”
Tips For Hosting A Black Tie Wedding — Simply Charming Socials
According to Gonzalez-Ramirez, the best brands for black-tie casual wear are BOSS and Ermenegildo Zegna for that classic, timeless style. For a more modern vibe, she recommends the Fear of God suit and speaks highly of the brand Rat & Boa, Johanna Ortiz and Redondo.
Head-to-toe white, ivory or cream is the perfect number for a black tie optional wedding. “An accent is fine, like a men’s jacket or women’s accessories,” says Gonzalez-Ramirez. “Unless guests are asked to wear white to the wedding, avoid wearing too light colors.”
“It’s also important to remember that this is still the couple’s big day, so you want to avoid wearing anything too flashy or at all that might take any attention away from the couple. Show off your personal style, but don’t let the newbies put in so much time, energy and money into this black tape thing. Do it for the bride and groom and their families,” she adds.
Gonzalez-Ramirez also recommends dressing for the location. “If the ceremony is held in an elegant living room, you can mirror the chandeliers by wearing intricate earrings,” she says.
Wedding Dress Code: Formal, Black Tie Optional
In terms of style, the black tie option invites you to really experiment with your hair, makeup and jewelry. “I think the black tie option is the opposite of everyday, so if you wear your hair up in everyday life, maybe get a cute half up and down hairstyle that will make you feel and look different,” said the stylist. . “When it comes to jewelry, leave your Apple Watch at home and wear jewelry that catches the eye. Be bold with makeup too!”
If you’ve made it this far and still aren’t sold on midi or full length, cocktail dresses are acceptable courtesy of the couple. But black-tie and black-tie optional weddings are a beautiful sight to behold when everyone really gets into it, so Gonzalez-Ramirez encourages you to take the opportunity to dress up! The pictures you get from that night will make it all worth it. Wedding season is upon us! What Is A Black Tie Wedding And How Do You Throw One?
Black-tie Optional Wedding Guest Dresses Under $100 But first, the question “What do you wear to a black-tie optional wedding?” Let’s start with the question.
Black tie optional dress code is actually one of the more complicated dress codes in my opinion. Both “black-tie optional” and “cocktail attire” have some blurred lines for me. We can focus on cocktail attire for another day.
Black-tie optional means dressing up more than you would at a cocktail or casual wedding, but certainly not as formal as black-tie. The black tie option really works for men. This means they can wear a tuxedo if they want to, but they don’t have to.
For women, a black tie option means wearing a full length or midi dress. You can also choose to be as fancy as you want here. The main thing to keep in mind is that your dress is long and not too short. I wear full length dresses to optional events with black and black ties and never have a problem.

For optional black-tie weddings, men may wear a tuxedo, but it is not required. If going without a tuxedo, they should wear a formal dark suit and wear a tie instead. Women can go the long evening dress route, but a smart suit or short cocktail dress is also fine.
My content is to leave the floor-length gowns to the young and role-playing and find more formal cocktail dresses. . . But it turned out to be more difficult than I expected.
Velvet and/or sequins felt too casual for an October wedding, lace felt too predictable, some dresses felt too safe and on and on.
