Beach Wedding Attire For Guests
Although getting married with the sand under your toes is the dream of many people, it can confuse guests as to what to wear. Unlike traditional dress codes such as cocktail, semi-formal, or formal, the “beach” element means you can think a little more comfortable, cool, and laid-back when dressing for the event. Of course, the time of year, weather and location will all be deciding factors when choosing your look.
Beach Wedding Guest Dresses: 18 Hot Styles + Faqs
Beach wedding attire can vary depending on the formality of the event, but generally calls for more casual and comfortable fabrics and accessories.
For more on beach wedding dresses and how to choose the perfect outfit for the occasion, we consulted wedding planners Megan Papageorge and Pamela Spence. “Beach wedding attire is the same as any other wedding where you dress according to the formality of the event, but unlike a normal celebration, there are a few small changes in accessories and fabrics that will make you more comfortable”, suggests Papageorge.
First, do a quick search of the venue to check the level of formality. Papageorge adds: “If the place simply overlooks the beach on a terrace or patio, then all you have to do is plan your outfit as usual. If, on the contrary, the ceremony and/or the reception take place in the sand, one can dress with confidence and adhere to the vibrations of the beach.
“The two biggest differences between beach wedding dresses and other wedding dress codes are the color scheme and the footwear,” says Pamela Spence. “You usually won’t see a little black dress and heels at a beach wedding.” with breathable fabrics, fun prints and simple, upscale basics for an effortless yet refined beach wedding look. Avoid denim and cotton t-shirts at all costs and only wear shorts or sandals if the venue/event is particularly casual.
What To Wear To A Winter Beach Wedding
In addition to avoiding black, the traditional color of wedding invitations, think about small touches that lend themselves to the theme without going overboard. Wear a sweetgrass clutch or consider a fishtail braid for your hair and stylishly add a beachy vibe.
A dress, suit or jumpsuit all work for a formal beach wedding. Opt for solid, lighter colors (avoid black, cream and white) and breathable fabrics. Long dresses and jumpsuits are acceptable for formal beach wear. To increase the elegance, wear a fabric like metallic or lace. Since stilettos are a hazard on the sand, wear high heels or formal sandals. Consider bringing a formal pair of heels to the reception if not on the beach.
Wear a suit or long-sleeved shirt and tie with a jacket and pants. Go for solid colors, avoid black, cream and white – a summer suit is a perfect solution. Consider a breathable fabric like linen, khaki or seersucker. Dress shoes or a nice pair of shoes that complement the pants are required. Shorts and sandals are not permitted.
A formal dress, suit, romper, or jumpsuit all work for semi-formal. Feel free to wear prints, avoid anything too loud. If you choose to wear a beach dress, consider it a tea length or maxi to avoid looking too casual. Dress shoes, high heels, and wedges are acceptable shoe options.
His & Her Wedding Guest Attire
Although a jacket isn’t necessary, a breathable sports coat or unique blazer is a fun addition. Feel free to wear prints, avoid anything too loud. Shoes can be a little more casual, but they should still be closed, like loafers or deck shoes. Shorts and sandals are not permitted.
Acceptable, avoid standard flapper beachwear. Nice short-sleeved shirts like polo shirts are allowed as well as nice shorts (think chinos) with a belt. Lighter colors and/or bold prints will enhance your casual look. Avoid jeans, cargos and swim shorts. Cotton t-shirts are not permitted. This is the only case where sandals might be acceptable, but make sure your feet are well-groomed before opting for an open-toed look. Otherwise, wear deck shoes or loafers, never sneakers.
While the formality of the dress code is sometimes stated on the invitation, other times the couple will simply request “beach wedding attire”. If so, Papageorge advises: “It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. “If the invitation doesn’t state formality, dress for a semi-formal event.
Think casual semi-formal attire, but with summer suits, breathable fabrics and touches of tropical elements. If you’re going to a casual beach wedding, remember: it’s not a family beach outing – it’s still a wedding. Leave the bathing suits and board shorts at home and if you opt for sandals, make sure they’re prettier than your usual beach flip flops. Sun hats are permitted, but removed during the procession so as not to block the view of other guests.
