Decorating Pine Cones – My kitchen is covered in holiday paint, but that’s part of the craft this time of year, right?!

We already started our homemade Christmas craft with our adorable pom pom pinecones and these cute pinecones are our latest handmade Christmas decoration project.

This DIY Christmas decorations activity is perfect for kids of all ages. Nothing fancy and it’s a very easy craft.

Fun For Kids: Holiday Decorating

Start with a selection of beautiful pine cones to make a “tree” of various shapes and sizes. You can go nature hunting to find these or it’s easy to buy them *online* from craft suppliers.

After you’ve chosen your pine cones, you’ll need a few other supplies to make your mini trees:

This is one of those crafts where precision doesn’t matter. Kids can add as much or as little paint to the pinecones as they like, and if they’re not completely covered, they still look great.

We painted some of our pine cones green and some silver. White is also bright for a snowy scene, and gold looks great too. Of course, you can build different paint colors on the pine cone or add silver or white paint to the tips of the snow branches.

When your pinecones are dry, you can add additional paint details if you haven’t already. We used red and gold dots to create the baubles.

When the painting is done and everything is dry, it’s time to create a base for each tree. *Air drying the clay is an easy way to do this, and if you can get it white, it makes the bases look like little snowflakes.

*Plaster of Paris also works well, but is more complex and requires some adult supervision.

Tear off a piece of clay from the block and roll it in your hands to make a ball. Aim for a ball slightly wider than the bottom of the pine cone.

After rolling your ball, gently press it on a flat surface to create a flat base, then push the bottom of the pine cone into the center of the ball. Be firm enough while doing this; You need a pinecone to stay!

We also used * mini terracotta pots to create bases for some of our trees. To do this, fill the pot with soil and push the pine cone up. You can also decorate dishes – paint works well here.

I returned home with a basket of pine cones. (Yes, another one, I can’t help myself.) You can check out more practical things I did with the first basket and learn some great ways to use pinecones around the house and garden.

Pine Cone Christmas Crafts, Decorations & Ornaments

Thinking of all the wonderful Christmas decorations I could make with my little evergreen casting basket. So I hit the internet in search of ideas.

I came across a beautiful, lovely, natural, cheerful, bright, easy, impressive Christmas decoration using pine cones.

Get out the glue and craft paints, put on the Christmas carols and make the hot cocoa and start creating. This craft will keep little hands busy on your next rainy (or snowy) afternoon when they’re stuck inside. And you get gifts for grandparents.

I love evergreens – pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, you name it. If there’s a smell of mountains or a decoration to hang, I’ll probably poke my nose in the woods somewhere and pick up needles or cones. You’d be surprised what you can do with pine needles.

If they made a balsam needle filled mattress pad I would buy it. (If that’s a thing, hit me up with a link and I’ll love you forever.)

True pine cones, at least the ones we need for our purposes, come only from pine trees. I know, it seems obvious, but if you’re looking for pine cones in the forest, it helps to know the trees you have.
