Candlelight, twinkling lights, and a moon that grew brighter as the night wore on (thanks to the spotlights) helped transform the conservatory into a midsummer-inspired dining room.

It was Tim Arpin and James Henning’s turn to throw a party for their supper club. They chose the date, thought of the theme and issued the invitations. RSVPs came quickly!

A party at Tim and James’ house is always a bonafide event! The detail-oriented duo ensures that this is always the case, whether it’s a casual barbecue for six on Sunday afternoon or a black cocktail party for six dozen on Saturday night.

Tim Arpin and James Henning used the theme A Midsummer Night’s Dream for three parties. They spent a month emptying the greenhouse and designing and installing decorative elements. Fortunately, all three parties managed to avoid the rainy weather that defined the summer of 2018.

Still, the party they hosted last summer was the first for the owners of The Gilded Lily, which Tim founded 30 years ago. The Kansas native came to Lancaster in 1987 to work at Witmer’s Greenhouses. After launching The Gilded Lily, he bought property near Columbia in 1993, building greenhouses and warehouses over the years to keep up with his company’s growth. Since then, he has provided his trademark gardening services to residential and commercial clients and has helped brides, corporations and non-profits transform venues into extraordinary party settings. “We can achieve magic,” says Tim.

Thirty years of working with clients and other suppliers, The Gilded Lily has added a new level of service to the menu: party planning. “We can style the party – from soup to nuts – and take the venue and transform it,” explains Tim. “If we don’t have what we need in our inventory, we can source it.”

The place chargers were made from timber harvested from the property. Sarah and Brian Laborde created them as a gift for Tim and James.

It reflects the woodland theme that completely transformed the Lancaster Country Club ballroom. Barns, meadows, aircraft hangars, restaurants, private clubs and museums reflect the look and themes Tim and James have developed for celebrations and fundraising events. “We have the rooms in private houses fully decorated for parties,” says James. They look forward to designing and hosting a party at Wildcat Bluff, a nature preserve in York County, where the Lancaster Conservancy is celebrating its 50th anniversary later this year.

Despite its conservative and traditional reputation, Tim insists that “party town” is an apt description of Lancaster. “It’s a socially active community – if you want it to be,” he says. “There always seems to be something to support or celebrate.”

Therefore, party hosts and planners are looking for ways to differentiate their events from the rest. “People are looking for different and fun ways to make their event special,” he notes. “They no longer want to settle for a pre-packaged look. They want their event to be the talk of the town. “

For a party at their house last year, Tim and James wanted to create their own little magic for their guests. As soon as spring came, they started making plans. Tim had always wanted to host a party in one of the greenhouses and decided that the summer of 2018 would provide the opportunity. The site was based on a theme that Tim had always loved – Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He did some research into the background of the play and watched the film version, which debuted in 1999 (to mixed reviews) and starred Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, Christian Bale, and Michelle Pfeiffer, among others. He loved the look of the film and its delivery – the magic of summer and a night in the forest.

Another hundred was also included in the theme – the site was used for three separate parties: one for Tim and James’ supper club, The Rascals, formed by members of the Hamilton Club’s Holiday and Major Events Committee in 2015. ; for the winners of the second auction held during the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra benefit; And finally, a party for The Gilded Lily team. Amazingly, both sides managed to escape the wrath of Mother Nature’s relentless storms that defined the summer of 2018. “Last summer was the most frustrating summer I’ve ever had gardening-wise,” says Tim. “The weather presented a major challenge for everything from gardening to weddings to outdoor events.”

Of course, the appearance of the party would be crucial to its success. Lighting will be key. Since the ground is always glowing, Tim and James decided to focus on filling the greenhouse with thousands of flashing white LED lights. Candles and dramatic crystal chandeliers defined the 25-foot-long dining table, which was raised above the stage and covered in soft green linens. The moon, which Tim created years ago and used in many projects, would be brighter before dinner.

To create the essential woodland look, Tim and James created planters wrapped in moss and planted orchids, ferns, ginger plants, peace lilies, birds of paradise, mountain figs, ivy, alocasia and nettles. Birch branches also filled the 20 foot tall planters that surrounded the inside of the greenhouse. A miniature version of the planters ran the length of the dining room table.

Above it, similar plants are attached to new Spanish moss, tetra stigma and various vines. “Everything was taken straight from our inventory,” reports Tim. Exceptions were orchids produced in Holland and artificial dandelions produced in China. “We saw them at a Christmas show in Germany,” explains Tim.

For the menu, Tim and James envisioned a summer harvest theme and the Hamilton Club culinary team took it from there, creating courses that celebrated the richness of the season.

But before the sun begins to set in the west, guests are treated to tropical gardens that distinguish the environment. To change the look of the regular visitors, Tim and James rearranged the furniture, moving it off the deck and patio and onto the lawn. The bar, which imitates a teak hut, has also been moved to the lawn to eliminate traffic congestion. “When the furniture was moved around it created more of a blending space,” explains Tim. He passed the deck to harpist Lewis Lynch.

Finally, the magic hour has arrived. It was time to move to the greenhouse for dinner. As the guests arrived, wonders appeared throughout the property. A few days later, the thank you notes started pouring in. One guest expressed gratitude for being invited to “the most beautiful and elegant dinner party” he had ever attended. Tim and James have obviously worked their magic!

Whether you’re celebrating the summer solstice, Halloween or St. John’s Day, the traditions of the longest day of the year are as old as time itself.

The tradition of celebrating the summer solstice dates back to pre-Christian days, when it was customary to celebrate the power of the sun with bonfires, reflecting the belief that fire has the power to cleanse and heal people from disease and curses. Protect them from danger. Plants with healing powers were also gathered on the night before the summer solstice and made into garlands that were worn on the head. Because evil forces were considered the weakest, marriages were held.

To change things up, Tim and James emptied the deck and patio furniture and placed them on the lawn to encourage guests to mingle.

Like many holidays, Christendom tried to take elements of pagan traditions and add religious meanings to them. The summer solstice also followed, as it became a day to honor Saint John the Baptist, whose birthday is celebrated on June 24. In fact, it is one of the oldest holidays celebrated in the Christian world.

St. John’s Day is unique. Although other saints are so honored on martyr’s days, St. John’s feast day coincides with his birthday.

Today, many parts of the world – especially Europe and Canada – celebrate St. John’s Day. Although bonfires still light the night sky on the eve of the holiday, they now worship the warmth and sunlight. He still has it today
