The homeland of the Kwakwaka’wakw – ‘Speakers of the Kwakwala’ – or Kwakiatl First Nations lies to the north of the Coast Salish people. The region stretches from Alert Bay on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island to the mainland, covering several islands in between. Masters of art and drama, the Kwakitl traditionally spent half the year within their clans and half in secret societies performing masquerade dances during winter ceremonies. These ceremonies eclipsed the conceptions and visions of all the other portling nations of the Pacific coast
Joe ‘Namgis is a First Nation descendant, grandson of Chief Alvin Edgar Alfred Joe’s carving began at the age of 21 after being exposed to the work of master carver Willie Seeweed.
Joe is known for his elaborate wood carvings and elaborate silver, copper and gold jewelry Joe led among other things a major project in the Netherlands, Dolphinarium Hardwijs The project consisted of a Kwakwakawk village incorporating the legend of the Undersea Kingdom.
