Once reserved only for the upper classes, masked balls returned to Venice, Italy in the 15th century at the beginning of the Renaissance movement, where art, beauty and imagination reigned supreme. Masquerade balls became increasingly popular in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, where rich and poor could mingle in ways forbidden by their strict social etiquette.

In February, you can travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the world’s largest and most famous masquerade party (known as Carnaval), Venice, where it all began, or visit the American equivalent of New Orleans for Mardi Gras . Don’t want to travel? Throw your own unforgettable event. Here’s how:

1. By invitation only: It may be the age of technology and inbox invitations via Facebook and Evite, but take the time and effort to send elegant invitations to your guests at least six weeks before the big event.

2. It’s all in the setting: The setting really creates the atmosphere. You can’t go wrong with candles of all shapes and sizes and elegant candles in gold and brown. Or forget the candles (primarily the fuse, right) and the twinkling lights hanging around the house and from the ceiling. Next, choose the color scheme: canary yellow or gold, peacock or royal blue with black, gold and red; Purple and green, black and white or black, white and silver. Use silk or velvet drapes to cover modern furniture. Fill glass vases with feathers and beads. Hang masks on the wall or create a centerpiece with them. Sprinkle glitter and sequins on tables and countertops.

3. Dress to impress: Get everyone in the spirit by making costumes (or at least masks) mandatory. Offers a prize for the best dressed of the night.

4. Celebrate with her: Don’t lose the magic by offering pizza, pretzels and potato chips. Treat your guests to delicious food. Ideas include stuffed mushrooms, crab puffs, baked artichoke squares with sun-dried tomato pesto, prosciutto-wrapped avocado, diamond-shaped gourmet cheese served with water crackers, spiced walnuts, breaded caviar or fresh tomato skewers . Fresh mozzarella drizzled with balsamic reduction. For dessert, consider a chocolate fountain and serve the cake and strawberry cubes on the side. Or make a dark or white chocolate mousse and serve cold.

5. Music of the night: If you have the means, hire a string quartet for the evening. Or, stream classical music through Pandora or create a playlist on your iPod that includes Vivaldi’s Four Seasons or some Mozart and Beethoven tunes.

6. Have fun: Masquerade balls automatically create an air of mystery and secrecy, so consider a crime mystery game where guests role-play and have to find out who the killer is. Other ideas include engaging in an engaging game of charades or clearing space on the ballroom floor where everyone can learn to waltz. You can also ask everyone to try to remain anonymous so guests can guess who is who until the big reveal at midnight where everyone has to take off their masks.

DIY Masks: Instructions and templates for how to make your own masks abound online. Supplies include scissors, cardboard (or a simple mask), glue, feathers, sequins, paint, and a dowel (for the handle). Another idea is to paint a mask over the face using airbrush paint or makeup. YouTube has great examples of this.

Get creative: put a twist on the classic masquerade ball and choose a different theme, such as all black and white, angels and demons, fairy tales or superheroes and villains. Mardi Gras is on Tuesday, March 4th this year and will be on Be in New Orleans weekend. I thought this would be a good time to share photos from the Gala Masquerade event I helped plan a few years ago. I wasn’t thinking about a future blog post when I took some photos, but I hope you get some useful ideas for your Mardi Gras themed masquerade or event. When I’m brainstorming ideas, I turn to the internet for help with ideas. I usually have something in mind but can’t find one to buy. When that happens, I do it myself, like this life-size wall mask.

After we hosted our event, we determined where the band, seating, gift table, and photo booth would be set up. I took some photos of the room so I can refer to it when I plan to buy any decor when I get home. My favorite place to find inexpensive gifts and decorations is the Oriental Trading site. The camera I used had eight sconces around it, which was perfect for the camera, but not for my occasion. I made these large masks to hang in front of the sconce. These masks were covered in glitter that sparkled at night with all the candles and lights in the band.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of the table. This is where we begin to determine what decorations will be in each setting. The centerpieces were easy to assemble. See the post below.

Sugar cookie mascara that I made. These cookies were baked with a stick and actually look like real hand masks. I was very pleased with how they turned out and the feedback I received from guests. I will do a post on how to make these cookies.

Thus, the masks were displayed in sconces with lights on in the evening. They sparkle and shine.
