My Manzanita Branches Are Here I Must Share My Excitement – I always wanted a potted tree to decorate my house all year round. Something sturdy to wear for various holidays and special occasions… I recently saw one online for $150 (plus shipping) and thought, “There has to be a more affordable option!”
After some research and a lot of experimentation, I found an affordable (and surprisingly, easy!) way to make one. I would like to: present to you: a Manzanita Tree tutorial!

If you can spare $20 and 1 hour, I’m sure you can make one for yourself! Gather your supplies and let’s make a tree!
The Manzanita Miracle, Or, Why You Should Love Native Plants If You Live In A Dry Climate
First step: choose the right size flower pot. Square vases have better stability, so if you decide to get a round vase (like I did), make sure it’s 6″ in diameter or larger. When you find the right flower vase, paint the outside with acrylic paint (Depending on the color you use, you may need two coats.) Let the paint dry thoroughly.
Step Two: Paint the inner lip of the flower pot as well. You won’t see the entire inside of the flower pot when you’re done, so you only need to paint 1″-2″ from the top. Set aside to dry.
Step Three: Select the branches you want to use. I prefer Manzanita branches because they are the strongest and most durable branches – perfect for home decoration! Place your styrofoam ball in your painted pot. Starting with the largest branch, press the trunk into your styrofoam ball. Depending on the thickness of the trunk, this step may take some muscle. Try to put the trunk at least half of the styrofoam ball.
Step Four: Repeat step three with your small branches until you have a full tree. You may need to use a pair of garden shears to cut the access branches to achieve the desired effect. (Note: Remember, Manzanita branches are very strong. Be careful with branch pruning.)

Step Five: Wrap Your Plaster of Paris. (I used about 1 pound of plaster mix.) Read the directions carefully and follow all directions – especially if you’ve never used plaster before! Pour your plaster mixture into your flower pot. Cover the styrofoam ball and go between the branches. I filled my pot until it was 1/2″ from the top edge. Then I used a plastic spoon to move the plaster, trying to get it as smooth and level as possible.
Now let your plaster dry for 24 hours. NOTE: The plaster may be hot when applied. Do not touch the plaster while it is drying and wash your hands thoroughly after mixing and pouring. Never touch the plaster with your bare hands.

When buying natural branches like Manzanita, keep in mind that they are different from other decorative branches used for floral design. Each is an individual form and sculpture, and can take a variety of forms and variations. Most professional hairstyles are created with multiple strands to achieve a complete look, so always consider buying extra pieces. This should be considered when buying your branches.
Shape: shapes vary by piece, harvest area and time of year. Manzanita can generally grow wide and flat rather than symmetrically, although we always try to send more symmetrical pieces.
Age: Manzanita branches will last indefinitely (we have centers in our showroom that are several years old). Cracks and splits will occur as the wood heals naturally, but this will not cause it to split in half, fall away, etc.
