Vitex To Jumpstart Ovulation – Vitex has earned its place in my top 5 favorite herbs for women and today I want to tell you how this powerful herb can help you with your hormones. Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common complaints I see in my practice and includes conditions such as:

Solid scientific evidence now supports the traditional use of vitex for female hormones – in this article I will guide you through what you need to know.

– also called chaste tree or chaste berry – contains several different components, including flavonoids, iridoid glycosides and terpenoids. It has a long history of use in herbal medicine and today is primarily used to relieve premenopausal symptoms. Vitex has outperformed placebo in many studies and is known as a natural hormone balancer. Although it does not appear to contain any active hormones on its own, vitex acts on hormones through its effects on the pituitary gland (and specifically on the production of luteinizing hormone, or LH). Vitex also controls prolactin secretion (more below) and improves both estrogen and progesterone levels.

A typical dose is 20-40 mg/day, although up to 240 mg of preparations containing the herb have been shown to be safe and effective. The tincture or liquid extract is taken in doses of 20-40 drops up to 3 times a day, some herbalists recommend up to 1 measured teaspoon (= 5 ml) a day, either all in one dose in the morning, or divided into 2 or 3 doses during the day.

Vitex is not necessarily a fast acting herb and you may not get immediate relief when you start using it – plan to give yourself at least three months before you expect changes and find other ways to deal with uncomfortable symptoms such as and frequent in the meantime migraines. For example, if you suffer from severe menstrual pain (or menstrual bleeding), I have shared a list of helpful, very fast-acting herbs in my post here. These include the warming and antispasmodic ginger and valerian root. In liquid tincture form, they provide almost instant relief when you need it. Now for the vitex!

Vitex appears to work in a number of ways: 1) works in a similar way to the “feel good” neurotransmitter dopamine, 2) reduces prolactin levels that rise during PMS, and 3) possibly works on our natural internal pain-relief system – theopioid system – by releasing beta-endorphins – something our body lacks during PMS (although make sure this herb is non-opioid and non-addictive!).

In a study where participants took 20 mg of vitex extract daily for three months, vitex was associated with improvements in all parameters of PMS: headaches, nervousness, restlessness, depression, breast inflammation and/or pain, bloating, and even appetite-related with PMS! Another study investigating the effects of vitex on menstrual headaches specifically found that women prone to menstrual migraines experienced a 66% response rate of dramatic headache reduction with 40 mg/day of vitex extract taken daily for 3 consecutive months. In fact, numerous studies support the use of vitex for various premenstrual symptoms.

Regular use of vitex has shown benefits in irregular menstrual cycles. These include amenorrhea (frequent or heavy bleeding), menopause (painful menstruation), and amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). Elevated prolactin can be a cause of amenorrhea and vitex has been shown to help control prolactin levels. In a controlled study, prolactin production returned to normal in women with high prolactin levels after three months of vitex treatment. Vitex has also been shown to increase luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and subsequent progesterone levels in women with luteal phase defects – a condition that can also lead to menstrual cycle imbalances such as amenorrhea.

One small preliminary study found that 10 of 15 women with amenorrhea resumed normal bleeding after taking 40 drops of liquid vitex once daily for six months. Another study included women with subfertility and showed an improvement in menstrual cycles after treatment with vitex compared to placebo.

Get your power back. It feels like home in the body. And be the force of nature that you truly are!

Vitex extract regulates ovulation, increases fertility and improves progesterone in women with PCOS. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an increasingly common and complex reproductive and endocrine disorder that causes polycystic ovaries, prolonged ovulation, and symptoms of irregular periods, acne, and infertility. In women with PCOS, the ovaries produce more androgens than normal. A high level of these hormones then affects the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Vitex has been shown to be effective in reversing the adverse effects of hormonal imbalance in PCOS.

Vitex supports fertility (especially in the case of a confirmed luteal phase defect, or a shortened second half of the menstrual cycle and a high level of the prolactin hormone); in fact, one of the “side effects” of some of the clinical trials done is that women got pregnant! It has also been used to prevent miscarriage in women with a history of miscarriage, possibly due to effects on progesterone.

In one study, 48 women (ages 23 to 39) diagnosed with infertility took vitex once a day for three months. Seven women became pregnant during the study and 25 women had normal progesterone levels – which could increase the chance of future pregnancies.

Vitex itself is not a pregnancy herb, and although it is not dangerous, I generally do not recommend its use during pregnancy, as I only use herbs with solid evidence of safety at this time, although if you have taken it while trying to conceive, especially to increase progesterone levels, work with a midwife, naturopath, herbalist or herbalist to taper in the first trimester. Again, it is not harmful and you can be sure to get pregnant on it if you have been using it for fertility purposes.

Vitex is generally recommended in lower doses to support lactation and to increase lactation; However, the higher dosage range can suppress breast milk production, so stick to the lower dosages mentioned at the beginning of the article.

Does Taking Vitex For Fertility Actually Work?

Vitex may help treat menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, sleep problems, and hot flashes, although most studies have also included St. John’s wort, black cumin, or soy isoflavones and are still considered theoretical in terms of research.

Since it has very few side effects, it can also be used during menopause if bleeding is irregular and to reduce emotional symptoms.

A clinical study of sixty postmenopausal female teachers aged 45 to 60 years examined the potential benefits of vitex for hot flashes. Participants were treated with vitex or placebo with 40 drops daily for 8 weeks. The reduction in hot flush frequency and severity in the vitex group was significant compared to placebo, from the fourth week of treatment until the 8th and final week. The results showed that vitex could be an excellent choice for postmenopausal women, especially for women who have contraindications to the use of female hormones.

Vitex Agnus Castus: Chaste Tree

Vitex is considered a very safe herb to use long-term – many of my patients stay on it for, say, 6 months at a time until hormonal balance is restored and treatment goals are met.

Because it may have mild estrogenic activity (although it has also been found to have antiestrogenic activity, again this may vary by dose) and increases progesterone, if you have a personal history of estrogen or progesterone receptor positive cancer, it is important to discuss this . use with an oncologist or primary care provider.

Interestingly, very few women—so few that it is not even mentioned in the medical literature—seem to experience increased or new depression in the first few days after starting to use this herb. If you experience this, you can simply stop using the herb, or if the symptoms are mild and you don’t think it’s bothering you, you can see if it goes away within a few more days of use—if it doesn’t. or mood swings get worse, go ahead and stop. It is not clear why this occurs, but it is probably due to hormonal effects.

Some women find that this herb shortens previously long periods and lengthens shorter periods—that is, the days between periods. Again, if this is a problem for you, adjust the dosage or work with an herbalist or naturopath knowledgeable in plant and female hormones who can help with dosage. Not all herbs are optimal for every woman!
