Whether your beach wedding aesthetic is more tropical, classic or boho, this style is all about simple, welcoming details that let the natural beauty of your beach location shine. If you’re planning a beach wedding, here’s what to consider—including our favorite beach wedding decorations and ideas for the big day.

The answer depends on where you’re getting married, but you should err on the side of caution and assume you’ll need a permit for a beach wedding. This is especially true for public beaches and parks, while you are less likely to need an additional permit if your wedding venue has a private beach. If you’re having trouble navigating the permit system (which is especially difficult for destination weddings), consider hiring a local wedding planner who has experience working at your wedding venue—they know exactly what to do and will be happy to help.

A Guide To The Beach Wedding Attire

There are tons of beaches around the country (and the world) that are great choices for a wedding. The most popular beach wedding destinations in the United States are Florida, Cape Cod, Southern California, and Hawaii. If you are considering a destination wedding, Mexico and the Caribbean are full of luxurious beach resorts and oceanfront venues.

Even if you’re not tying the knot at a seaside location, you can still have a beach-themed wedding — especially if your location is near another body of water, such as a river or lake. Some of our favorite waterfront homes in this style include yacht clubs, lake houses, and lawns.

A beach themed wedding is perfect if you love bright and vibrant color palettes. If you want a tropical look, choose a fun color scheme like fuchsia, teal, orange, yellow, purple and green. For nautical weddings, focus on a classic color palette, a bold color palette like navy blue and white with coral or blush. Do you love boho style? Add warm tones to your beach wedding palette, such as rusty orange, marigold and dusty rose, to create an earthy, laid-back vibe.

If statement shades aren’t your thing, opt for pastels and neutrals that will give your wedding a vintage, beachy chic look. Some combinations we love if you go this route: light blue and gray, ivory and peach, or white and turquoise.

If your beach wedding color palette is filled with tropical hues, find flowers that complement the vibrant atmosphere, such as lilies, orchids, hibiscus, anthurium, plumeria, palm fronds and protea. For a beach themed wedding with a classic or vintage twist, choose flowers in white or pastel tones. Hydrangeas, roses, peonies, rununculus, anemones, sweet peas and delphiniums are just a few we love. Finally, if you’re planning a boho-meets-peaky wedding, you can add lots of greenery or pampas grass to give the bouquets and arrangements a wild, untamed look.

If you want to add beach-inspired accents to your flower arrangements, use well-placed seashells or starfish, or add sail rope and long ribbons that look great in the sea breeze. Antique style hurricane vases and lanterns are popular for beach wedding centerpieces. You can fill them with sand or seashells and top with flowers, or leave them bare and add lanterns or floating candles for a romantic effect.

One of the great things about a beach wedding ceremony is that you can keep your decor minimal and let the decor do the work. With ocean views, you don’t need much else to impress your guests – you also don’t want to block out the natural beauty of your venue! For the ceremony, we recommend limiting your decor to the altar, arch or chuppah, aisle markers, and a sign or two at the entrance. And if you’re using a public beach, be aware that there may be limited time for the ceremony, as well as restrictions on the types of decorations you’re allowed to use. Our final tip: Beaches and beach locations can also be unexpectedly windy, so be careful with all the decor to avoid accidents mid-ceremony.

Beach wedding decor doesn’t have to be fussy or over the top. Be selective when it comes to choosing beach-inspired accents – you want your wedding to feel like a wedding again, not a beach town souvenir shop filled with mismatched pieces. Seashells, starfish and sand are perfect for a beach themed wedding, but we recommend using them sparingly. Remember: sometimes less is more, and not every part of your decor needs to be beach-themed. The key is to mix in non-beach items to keep the space balanced and cohesive.

Citruses and pineapples are popular accents if you’re going for a tropical beach wedding aesthetic. Known as a symbol of hospitality, pineapples are fun and welcoming, and they can easily be used as wedding ceremony markers or centerpieces. Citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, limes, kumquats) can be used to create a striking centerpiece, to display an escort or place cards, or to decorate your beach wedding cake.

Call us biased, but looking for wedding inspiration is one of the most exciting things about wedding planning. Use these beach themed wedding ideas to get you started when you’re ready to plan your decor.

Colorful hibiscus and pineapple motifs give your wedding guests a glimpse of your beach-themed wedding as soon as they open the invitations.

Dressing up your bridal party in Hawaiian print shirts and flip flops won’t fly anywhere but the beach. Good tailoring and quality are essential if you want to avoid that ultra-casual sloppy look – maybe you’re going for a relaxed vibe, but your clothes should still be pressed and your shoes in good shape.

If you’re going barefoot for a beach wedding, consider adding sandals to enhance your look. The lei is especially popular in Hawaiian weddings and symbolizes love, friendship and celebration.

Woe to your guests, mark the entrance to your ceremony with two surfboards standing upright in the sand.
