I’ve heard that borage oil and evening primrose oil both have anti-inflammatory properties, but I don’t know much about them. What makes this oil beneficial? What would you recommend for someone looking to reduce inflammation?
Borage oil comes from the seeds of the plant Borago officinalis, also known as star flower. Evening primrose oil is obtained from the yellow wildflower, Oenothera biennis. Both of these oils are rich sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), along with black currant seed oil.

Not all omega-6 fatty acids are created equal. Most of the omega-6 fatty acids in our Western diet come from processed vegetable oils that promote inflammation.
On the other hand, GLA is an important omega-6 fatty acid that helps reduce inflammation. There is some evidence to suggest that it may also protect DNA.
GLA supports cellular and immune health. It provides its anti-inflammatory benefits by converting to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) which is a precursor to inflammatory prostaglandins and antithrombotic leukotrienes. However, for this conversion to occur, you must have adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, vitamin C, and B vitamins.
These beneficial omega-6 fatty acids have been shown to help reduce the symptoms of conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, eczema and rashes, PMS, and mastalgia (breast pain). Some studies have shown mild benefits in arthritis, high blood pressure (although not as many omega-3 fatty acids as fish oil), and other inflammatory conditions such as asthma.
Organic Borage And Evening Primrose Oils
Borage oil contains more GLA than evening primrose oil, and GLA from borage seeds contains only small amounts of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are mainly concentrated in the leaves and flowers of the plant. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, especially ambilin, are known to be toxic to the liver. Therefore, it is imperative that you purchase your borage oil supplement wisely.

There are a variety of nutritional supplements that women use for hormone health, and one of the most popular is evening primrose oil, which is used for acne, PMS (breast and uterus) pain, and even menopause.
GLA stands for Gamma-Linolenic Acid. GLA is an important omega-6 fatty acid that helps maintain healthy cell membranes. It is a precursor to hormones and anti-inflammatory compounds including prostaglandins and leukotrienes. (1)

GLA is also found in safflower oil and perilla oil through genetic modification. (4 , 5 ) GMO safflower is 40% GLA and perilla oil is over 45% GLA. It is worth noting that many of the GLA supplements available are likely to be GMO. Evening primrose oil (EPO) is probably the best known source of GLA. Many women take evening primrose oil to help balance hormones and calm inflammation. But is EPO the best natural source of GLA? Looking at the percentages above, the answer is: not really.
Like oranges as a source of vitamin C or bananas as a source of potassium, there’s just a ton of marketing and education behind EPO – even in naturopathy schools. The best natural source of GLA is borage seed oil.
In fact, borage oil contains 2 to 3 times more GLA than evening primrose oil, which is why we use borage instead of evening primrose in our GLA Maximus supplement.
It is known to increase prostaglandin levels in general. It can increase pain levels and increase menstrual cramps. This is because prostaglandins stimulate the uterine muscles to shed the lining of the uterus. It can also contribute to chronic inflammatory conditions. (6, 7)

Borage has an advantage over evening primrose in that it is non-estrogenic and does not increase any prostaglandin levels.
Borage (Borago officinalis) is a herb also known as star flower and is native to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia. The flowers and young leaves are often used in salads and drinks, as they have a mild cucumber-like flavor. (8)
GLA is abundant in the oil contained in the seeds. As noted above, some studies have calculated percentages between 18 and 26%—double that of night lights. Others have calculated the ratio to be 26 to 38% – three times higher than night lights. (9)
GLA can be used internally as a supplement or externally as an oil. Here are some potential medicinal benefits of using GLA internally:

GLA can help balance estrogen levels to manage estrogen dominance; It does so by reducing inflammation (via prostaglandins, mentioned below) and oxidative stress, improving liver health, and supporting anti-estrogen therapy.
In a study of women with estrogen-sensitive breast cancer, taking GLA supplements (2.8 grams per day) along with the estrogen-blocking cancer drug tamoxifen improved the effectiveness of the drug. (10)
GLA is excellent at reducing inflammation, which indicates its effectiveness as a pain reliever. We have found good results with GLA for hormonal pain, such as breast and uterine pain with PMS. Research supports this and shows that some people may do better when they combine GLA with an omega-3 supplement. (11, 12)
One cause of PMS pain is an imbalance between anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. (7) GLA converts to prostaglandins PgE1 and PgE3 (natural pain relievers) and suppresses PgE2 (causes pain).
Evening Primrose Oil And Borage (60 Caps.)
In people with pain and inflammation due to arthritis, GLA-rich borage and blackcurrant oil reduced joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness in 4 clinical trials with a total of about 150 people. (13, 14, 15, 16)
GLA, fish oil, and a combination of the two reduced pain, inflammation, and painkiller dependence in 4 trials with nearly 400 people. (17, 18, 19, 20).
GLA may support weight loss. In a study of people who were overweight but had lost a lot of weight, GLA was studied to see if it could help keep the weight off and prevent weight gain. (21)
In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, GLA was administered daily in the form of 5 grams of borage oil (the control received olive oil). In the past, obese people were given borage or olive oil. At the end of the study, those who received borage oil/GLA lost more weight than the control group.

This may be due in part to its ability to restore the skin to its natural pH level.
The right acidic pH allows the right microbes to grow on the skin’s surface. Skin conditions and disorders can occur when the skin microbiome is thrown out of balance.
Here are some that have been linked to changes in the skin’s pH and its microbiome: (23, 24)
