A Guide To Planning A Backyard Wedding This Summer
A: Check out the pros and cons and past questions! There is a lot of time, planning, planning that goes into having a backyard wedding.
A: Check out these pros and cons above! It all depends on your settings. As a professional event planner in Chicago, I can tell you that hosting a backyard wedding does NOT get any easier. Does your backyard have an indoor space that can accommodate the desired number of guests? If not, we recommend investing in a tent that can increase your expenses!
A: It all depends on the surface and dimensions. Having a professional event planner visit your venue is a great way to find out how to choose the right marquee. Tents can range from $1500 for a very basic white canvas tent with no walls or floor to $15,000 for a luxury tent with all the bells and whistles. It all depends on the size, number of guests, material and amenities such as lighting. Check out one of our dealer tent options here.
A: It all depends on your surface. Here’s a square footage calculator from HomeAdvisor. Generally, you want to have enough space to host a ceremony followed by dinner. Ideally, your backyard is large enough to set up the ceremony and reception ahead of time so you don’t have to run around during cocktail hour. However, if you have another location, perhaps indoors for guests to enjoy cocktails, you can make an easy and efficient turnaround from your ceremony to your reception.
Pros And Cons Of Hosting A Backyard Wedding
A: The average wedding in Chicago is about $400 per person. Included in this price is your caterer who will help you manage and bring your china, cutlery, glassware, tables, chairs, linens etc. It usually ranges from $110 to $250 per person. If you’re going to do it yourself with your backyard wedding, you may see a lower price per person, but it all depends on your setup and how much you need to bring. Ideally, you’ll have a fabulous indoor space that can accommodate the number of guests you want because there’s no need to rent a tent. If you need to bring everything, you could be looking at closer to $500 per person.
A: Backyard weddings can be absolutely stunning. Tacky is all about individual taste, but we define tacky as something that is poorly organized and poorly managed. If you’re planning a backyard wedding to make things easier or save money, think again. This can lead to “ticky” terrain.
A: For any wedding we recommend 13 – 18 months. If you are having a backyard wedding and planning it yourself without the help of an event planner, we recommend 13 months to 2 years. It takes even MORE work to host an event of this size and importance at your own venue. You have to build your vision and team from scratch. It doesn’t include all the planning you have to figure out. Think of it like buying a house. Do you want to build a house or buy one that is ready to move into?

“Be realistic about the space you have in your backyard,” advises Fritz. “If you need a tent because of a rain plan (or your design vision), make sure your guest list matches the size of the tent.”
