Nail polish on nails seems to last five minutes. On the foot? That thing can survive anything. But you don’t need to remove it often because it sticks permanently. According to Dina, it’s important to rest your toes, otherwise they’ll get marked and darkened (like mine).
“If you’re a serial nail-painter, give yourself a break in between,” says Dina. “Even two hours will give them a chance to replenish. But if you can do a week, that’s amazing.” After removing your polish (Dina isn’t too keen on choosing something acetone-free, unless that’s what you want), she recommends soaking your feet in warm salt water for a few minutes. Once they are dry, you can apply a new coat of polish. “I renew the polish every two weeks.”
It can be tempting to swipe on polish, especially when the weather is warm. But Dina emphasizes the importance of always starting with a base coat. “You should use a base coat every time, but a lot of people are guilty of not doing it. There are a lot of chemicals that go into nail polish and it can affect the nail bed.” Dina says that applying polish to bare nails can lead to a discolored nail plate, where the toenails can turn white, chalky and yellow. “If you’re someone who doesn’t notice any changes, you’re in luck, because polish weakens the nail and leaves you vulnerable to things like fungal infections, dryness, cracking, and flaking—things you want to avoid.”

Manicurists always extol the benefits of cuticle oil, but dedicated toenail oil is also a thing and can breathe new life into feet that are a little worse for wear. If they’re a little rough, make three more, then stop.” Dina suggests using such a tool several times a week, rather than aiming to get it all at once. “Leave a lot and then scrub, scrub, scrub. But the biggest contributor to dry skin is not moisturizing enough. “A lot of people forget this,” says Dina, “when you’re in the shower or in the bath, you’re exposing things to soapy water,” which can be drying. “Would you wash your face and not apply moisturizer afterwards?”
