The singer/songwriter recently scored his fifth consecutive No. 1 single with “You Should Be Here.” Co-written by Swindell and Ashley Gourley, the song was No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart for four weeks (number of digital streams, radio airplay and sales) and spent several weeks on both country airplay charts. In addition to selling over 550,000 copies, “You Should Be Here” has amassed over 30 million streams and over 15 million YouTube views. The single follows Swindell’s first four consecutive singles as a solo artist (most recently the gold-certified No. 1 smash “Let Me See Ya Girl,” the platinum-certified mega-hit “Hope You’re Lonely Tonight,” “Ain’t No Worth Whiskey,” and “Chillin’ It.” And it marks his eighth overall as a songwriter.

Swindell hasn’t completely abandoned his suburban songs if you buy CD music, recalling the party tunes that earned him number one hits. However, it moves to minor keys and follows the R&B rhythm of Sam Hunt’s 2015 hit You Gotta Be Here. Tellingly, he also embraces a modicum of maturity, or at least heartbreak themes: not cool when he asks a girl to dance, wishing the party would never end and struggling with lingering memories. Rumors like this mean you have to be a little slower here — “I can’t” is piled up at the end of the song and the speed is only one time — but this gives a break. The cross shake does not at all suggest that Swindell was shooting for the middle lane. That trick turns out to be his greatest asset: Beneath the everyday smile, he knows not just what he’s selling, but what he’s selling, which is key to a successful country-pop artist. ACM New Artist of the Year Cole Swindell’s latest single, “You Gotta Be Here,” the first single from his upcoming album due out this year, topped country radio on the first day of its release. Written by Swindell and Ashley Gourley, the song went to No. 1 on the iTunes Country chart and the top 10 overall, entering the top 25 a week before its official radio date of January 11. International Yahoo! The featured official video for “You Should Be Here” has been streamed over 7.5 million times on his YouTube channel alone. Shazam was the first country artist to contribute a track to an episode of the popular series.

Swindell’s self-titled debut album (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) was certified gold by the RIAA. Selling 4.1 million tracks and more than 234 million streams, Swindell’s debut LP included his latest No. 1 single, “Let Me See Ya Girl,” the first of three consecutive chart toppers as a platinum-certified solo artist. Hope You’re Lonely Tonight, “Whiskey Ain’t Got It” and “Chillin’ It,” made him the only male artist in Country Aircheck/Mediabase history with his first four singles. Named Billboard’s top new country artist, Swindell was awarded the CMA’s “Triple Play Award” in 2015 for having (at least) three No. 1 songs in twelve months, and was the only performer this year to do so. Swindell previously toured with Jason Alden, Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan for his second studio album. But overall, the album offers variety and depth that his debut did not.

“Stay Downtown” is a good representative of the album as a whole. Swindell continues to sing to the crowd, not the band, through music and lyrics. Arthouse critics won’t take much notice of this 12-song set, but rest assured there will be plenty of hits beyond the title. The ballad, written by Cole Taylor and Matt Dragstrom, turns the late-night phone call story on its head, and the vocals create a simple melody.

. The song “Break” stands out, comparing his heart to a truck that’s left to shut down on the soft shoulder of a highway. “Lay” is a great love song, but “Remember the Boys” is the real star of this album. This acoustic life lesson suits Swindell better than anything he’s released to date. It’s the same song.

It does not sink in the product, and the rest is as refreshing as taking a bath in August. Brad Tursi (of Old Dominion) and Dorf wrote the lyrics, but the 32-year-old Georgia native adds soul.

Fans of Cole Swindell’s albums will find a few party songs (“Can’t Get Back Out” and “Flatliner” with Dierks Bentley), but the heart of this album is Swindell’s heart. Although it is not vulnerable, it is a project that opens the door for him to show many scars in the future.

He has created high hopes for his upcoming sophomore album, “Flatliner,” a collaboration with Dierks Bentley.

“I originally wrote it four years ago for Dierks, he tried to record it and now we sing it together,” Swindell says of the tune. “It’s wonderful.”

Set for release on May 6, it will feature the 90s country anthem “Broke Down” and the previously released song “Kiss” titled “Midnight.” Cole Swindell’s poignant song “You Gotta Be Here” has taken on new meaning since a shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas left 58 dead.

One of the dead was fellow countryman Brennan Stewart, whose death was widely covered as “You Should Be Here”. Swindell has also seen it and plans to meet the victim’s family when he stops by Vegas for an upcoming show.
