Jen is an event coordinator and has years of experience making her couples dream home and backyard weddings!
According to Jen… Backyard weddings have always existed, but with so many doubts, more and more couples are choosing to host celebrations in their own homes or even at their parents’ homes where they grew up! I love that this trend is becoming more and more popular and I hope it continues for a long time. I’ve been lucky enough to help coordinate and plan a few backyard events and get to know them up close, but before you decide if a home wedding is right for you, read my tips below.

Bistro lights hanging over patios, twinkling lights wrapped around trees, and cozy lounges that unfold under a beautiful canvas tent…it’s a dreamy setting, but real word: it takes A LOT of work to make it look effortless. Backyard weddings can be amazing, but when planning a home wedding, you need to consider all the things you might take for granted in a traditional wedding venue, such as ample parking, guest restrooms, and even a dance floor. It’s not enough to have a big yard and lots of outdoor outlets (although that’s a great start)! Building “a place” from the ground up means there’s a lot to manage, and it can be overwhelming for newlyweds and their families. Consider hiring a coordinator or planner to help with logistics; this party is more complicated than your backyard barbecue!
One of the biggest advantages of a home wedding is that the space available and your budget are generally the only two constraints on your guest list. Your patio and your finances can accommodate 250 guests, but have you thought about where they will park? Don’t forget your vendors will be coming too. Outdoor parking with a shuttle is a good solution for your guests, but vendors may need quick and easy access to their car equipment (remember, your planner thinks it’s “big” and they need to make sure your vendors can do their best work). And since you probably don’t want 250…or even 75…people using your home’s bathrooms, you’ll also need to consider your guest bathrooms. Fortunately, the humble porta potty has come a long way, and high-end “luxury loos” with running water and air conditioning are commonplace for domestic events.
Every city is different and some have strict ordinances about noise, alcohol consumption or gatherings of a certain size after a certain hour. A quick phone call to City Hall will give you all the information you need about any necessary permits or licenses. Don’t skip this step or “accidentally” forget to browse because there’s nothing worse than having your party shut down in the middle of cocktail hour. If you work with a coordinator or planner, they will take care of this crucial step for you.
It is a common misconception that a backyard wedding will save couples a huge amount of money. It can certainly be cheaper than a traditional wedding venue, especially if you choose a more economical menu and reduce your guest list. However, whatever money you save on venue fees, you can expect to reinvest in renting the necessary equipment for your garden event. Along with the tent, tables, chairs, dance floor, and restrooms, you’ll need to consider lighting, bedding, staff, and more, much of which will come from different companies that specialize in a particular area. Having a coordinator can help you recommend and track different service providers and figure out exactly what items to bring.

There is nothing more special than walking down a grass street where you used to play as a child. You’ll feel more relaxed and at ease getting ready in a home that’s already filled with a lifetime of beautiful memories, and think how much fun it will be for future generations of your family to look at your wedding photos and get to know the place! Most people don’t make unlimited visits to the wedding venue once the ceremony is over, but then you will be countless times. Yes, there are a lot of variables when planning your wedding at home, a lot of pieces and moving parts. But having the right coordinator or planner by your side, someone experienced in garden events and someone who will look after and treat your home with respect will ensure a smooth and joyful experience.

I’m not a wedding blogger, but I do have a little experience in that department: I got married almost eight years ago and even created DIY projects for a wedding blog long before that.
