Starting your career can feel daunting, especially when it comes to resume writing. Key Sections and Content
1. Contact Information
This is your first impression. Include your full name, professional-sounding email address (avoid nicknames!), phone number, and a LinkedIn profile URL (if you have one). Ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date.
2. Summary/Objective
Choose one based on your situation. A summary is best if you have some relevant experience, even if it’s from internships or volunteer work. It briefly highlights your key skills and career goals. An objective is better for those with minimal experience, focusing on what you hope to achieve and how you can contribute to the company. Keep it concise – 2-3 sentences max.
3. Education
Place this section higher on your resume if you’re a recent graduate. Include the name of the institution, degree earned, graduation date (or expected graduation date), GPA (if it’s above 3.5), and any relevant coursework, honors, or awards. If you have a high GPA in your major, consider highlighting that separately.
4. Skills
Create a dedicated skills section listing both hard and soft skills relevant to the jobs you’re applying for. Hard skills are technical abilities like software proficiency or data analysis. Soft skills are interpersonal attributes like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Research the job description to identify keywords and tailor your skills list accordingly. Categorize skills for better readability (e.g., Technical Skills, Communication Skills).
5. Experience
This is where you showcase your accomplishments, even if they’re not directly related to the job. Include internships, volunteer work, part-time jobs, and relevant school projects. Use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and accomplishments, quantifying your achievements whenever possible. For example, instead of “Assisted with customer service,” write “Resolved customer inquiries efficiently, resulting in a 15% increase in customer satisfaction.” Even seemingly simple jobs can demonstrate valuable skills like responsibility, time management, and teamwork.
6. Projects/Activities (Optional)
If you lack significant work experience, consider adding a section for personal projects, extracurricular activities, or relevant coursework. This section allows you to showcase skills and interests that align with the job requirements.

Choose a clean, professional-looking template that is easy to read. Avoid overly fancy fonts or distracting graphics. Use a consistent font size and style throughout your resume. Ensure there’s plenty of white space to improve readability.
