This is how our Tinkerbell Steampunk costume came to life. Every year at the end of August, I ask my three daughters what they would like to wear. So we spend most of September planning and creating. This year my thirteen year old had a hard time deciding on his outfit. She knew she didn’t want a wig or heavy makeup because she did it last year and it turns out wigs can be itchy. But she likes dresses with frills and frills and long skirts that have some movement. She started looking at Victorian and Edwardian style dresses but still had no idea what to wear because she also wanted something funky and blonde.

That’s how we came up with the idea of a steampunk Tinkerbell costume. It can have some frills and shadows and a lot of fun and creativity. First we went to the local thrift store, where my sewing experience consists of making a pillow in seventh grade and watching YouTube tutorials. I thought basing her steampunk outfit on a Disney character would make her more recognizable and give us some parameters to work within. She found a beautiful dark green velvet blouse and the idea for a steampunk Tinkerbell costume was born.

We changed and added from there. I made lace sleeves from another thrift store and added them to the neckline. I shortened the skirt and dyed it a bright apple green, then found some lace extensions that could tuck and puff. I made a corset out of kraft foam and faux leather with a jewelry box closure for clips. I made the leaves from different fabrics and gathered them under an oak tree to decorate the skirt. I then added stuffed pom poms to the shoes which were also found at a thrift store.
The fingerless gloves are more of a faux leather with recycled webbing for the cuffs. I only had to make the gloves three times before I realized that cutting off the fingers completely was the only way to make them fit his hands. what can i say i’m super smart.
The leaves were made from wire hangers, foam craft gears with iridescent cellophane. It turns out that rolling up the cellophane (under a towel, of course) works better at stretching and hardening it than heating it with a hair dryer. Also, making sure your kitchen table is a crumb-free zone before using a sheet of cellophane covered with spray adhesive is another life hack for you.
My daughter was worried that no one would understand her outfit and tell who she was, but people immediately recognized the puffs on her legs and the wings on her back as Tinkerbell, the corset and the outfit. There was enough to add just the steampunk tie. -We went to a park to take pictures and she got so many smiles and compliments that she felt relieved.

I made a trench coat from the simple pattern 4083. Yes, we could have bought a trench coat at a thrift store, but it looked better than what we found and was cheaper. I can also add a cool blue lining on the inside. This is a very simple model. The lining isn’t part of the pattern though, so I had to make it, which involved a bit of complexity, but I’ve used this pattern so many times that it wasn’t too difficult. I used Simplicity 4083 to make a coat for the Mad Hatter, Jack Frost, Joseph Smith and even a cape for Prince Philip.
We watched a few YouTube videos on how to make stains before making them. Basically, you wrap a piece of paper around your ankle and mark where your foot curves, the forefoot and the heel. We used some faux snakeskin fabric we found that really didn’t hold up very well, but it just added to the elegant look I hope. We then added straps, buckles and buttons to finish them off. They also have a dark elastic strap that goes under the foot to keep shoe stains at bay.
We found cheap double hole vinyl belt everywhere. The holes were great because we didn’t have to drill any holes in the belt to add accessories. We used a leather strap to tie a wooden stake, a flask, a gun holster, a hatchet, a weird electrical switch we found in my father-in-law’s garage, and silver bullets (basically everything you need to fight the monster) . Silver bullets are embedded in oval beads, sterling silver and hollow powder bullets.
We started with a realistic looking toy pirate gun (which we’ve used for several costumes) and added whatever we could find to give it a more steampunk look, including a larger caliber and case, an old ceramic heater that plugs into the socket (on the barrel) , and lots of wires and cables. Everything was wired because we wanted to be able to reuse the original gun in the future.

In the meantime, let me just tell you that we made it out of two layers of black kraft foam, spray painted silver and brushed it with a shoe polish brush to give it that vintage metal look. We considered making glasses because there are tons of tutorials on how to make them, but we ended up buying them because they cost less than the materials to make them ourselves. Also, aren’t studs cool?!

Steampunk clothing was the quintessential style of ladies and gentlemen of the Victorian era. With items such as busts, corsets, dresses and petticoats for women and suits with waistcoats, coats, top hats and bombshells, tailcoats and patches for men. Or you can go with a military inspired outfit. Steampunk costumes usually have a lot of technological and Victorian accessories, such as clocks, umbrellas, flying/driving goggles and ray guns. Modern accessories such as mobile phones or music players can be used in steampunk costumes if they look like items from the Victorian era.
