In this capacity, we rate and highlight a variety of children’s books that we have collected in our office. Our staff have personally used these books with their own children and have received excellent feedback. Today we report on What If You Had Animal Teeth by Sandra Markle and Howard McWilliam.

This book is a great idea for any child who loves science, biology or animals. Each page covers a different creature, what their teeth look like, and what they’re used for. Both children and adults will find these facts interesting and thought provoking. The book also briefly introduces human teeth, what they do and why it is important to keep them beautiful and healthy!

What If You Had Animal Teeth?

Since the book begins with a story about losing two front teeth, it is best suited for children aged 6-7 (when the middle front teeth are usually removed). However, we believe this book would be fun and interesting for a much wider age group of children. The only warning is that some of the images and illustrations may be alarming for younger children (snakes with teeth, children with animal teeth, etc.).

As with all stories we review, you can check them out at your next appointment. We always love to do whatever we can to inspire and educate your family about dental health! So, I went crazy last week! I didn’t know there were 5 Sundays in March and we moved on! So it’s the 2nd Sunday of the month and we’re connecting to Science. We’ll have to figure it out for you somehow when we get to the last Sunday of the month.

I found this book at the Scholastic Book Fair last year! It’s called “What If You Had Animal Teeth” by Sandra Markle. I’m really looking forward to using it when we talk about scientific adjustments! I’m sorry I can’t show it in use, but I will use it and then I can show what we made with it!

If You Had Animal Teeth

Here’s the synopsis from Amazon: WHATIFYOUHADANIMALTETH? takes children on a fun, informative and imaginative journey as they explore what it would feel like if their own front teeth were replaced with the teeth of another animal. Featuring a dozen animals (beaver, great white shark, narwhal, elephant, rattlesnake, naked mole rat, hippopotamus, crocodile, and more), this book explores how different teeth are specifically adapted for an animal’s survival. At the end of the book, children learn why their own teeth are right for them. And they are kindly reminded to take good care of their teeth because they are the only teeth they will ever have. Each spread features a photo of an animal using its special teeth on the left and a humorously illustrated photo of a child using the animal’s teeth on the right.

What If You Had Animal Teeth

I think this is a great way to display two pieces of text on the same topic. I like to use books like What if you had animal teeth? To show students how to write their own informational or informational texts!

How beautiful are these pictures? I love that they get kids thinking about what it would be like to have different teeth! It definitely fits into why certain animals have special adaptations!

I will be using this fun book along with The Dental Book by Sneed B. Collard to learn even more about teeth. And not that Collard’s book is boring, but what if you had animal teeth? could catch their attention a little more if we talk about customizations. What do you think?

And our friend Nick Sweet from Rhyme, Pure Reason has a scoot game we’ll be using this week about ecosystems and biomes that work perfectly with this device! In case you missed it your product is also in this pack that we have two products in the Educents science pack!! That’s a great offer!

I hope you have a great week next week! Today is our last day of spring break and then 2 weeks for farm testing. Pooh!! We’re about to hit the ground running! I have worked hard with my children on their writing skills. We focused on writing full sentences, correct capitalization, phonetic spelling, and most importantly, organizing and expanding ideas. This is really hard work for 5-6 year olds!

If You Had Animal Teeth

I love “opinion writing” because my students have MANY opinions that they are always willing to share. Seriously, once you start a topic, you can go on and on. The hardest part is explaining why they feel the way they do. We’ve been working on that.

What If You Had Animal Teeth Writing Activity

Our most recent foray into opinion writing was inspired by Sandra Markle’s amazing book, What If You Had Animal Teeth? inspired.

We read the book as part of our DentalHealth unit and it easily sparked a discussion about which animal teeth we would like to have.

After our little brainstorming and sharing of original ideas in small groups, my students started writing. Our first drafts are always in our finished notebooks. It’s a great way to save all of our work and see how student writing is progressing throughout the year.

I gave my students a basic framework (see below)
