Japanese Hair Straightening – Whether you want to reduce frizz, minimize the heaviness of coarse hair or achieve shampoo-worthy shine, keratin treatments are considered the gold standard when it comes to smoothing and straightening. From KeraStraight to Brazilian blow drying, there are numerous treatments available in salons up and down the UK, but one trend in particular is gaining traction with hair experts and regular keratin customers alike. Type: Japanese hair straightening.
Ahead, we asked hair experts to share everything they know about the popular treatment, including its key benefits and where you can get it once hair salons reopen.

What Is Japanese Hair Straightening Or Thermal Reconditioning?
Otherwise referred to as thermal reconditioning, Japanese hair straightening consists of a chemical solution containing cystine, which changes the texture of the hair permanently, says hairdresser Tomoyuki of Tomoyuki & Co in London’s Fitzrovia.
Once the solution is applied to the hair, it breaks the bonds within, flattening each wave. “It stays in the hair for about 20 minutes depending on hair type and length,” says Chi Ena of Hairlux salon in Soho. “This is the period of development where the chemical process deactivates the bonds. When the bonds are completely broken, then the product is washed away.”
The next stage is ironing. The hair is then prepped with conditioning treatments to keep it well-hydrated, nourished and strong throughout the process, Chi adds. “Once absorbed, small sections of hair are passed through the plates at 180 degrees, sometimes lower for damaged hair.”
Once the hair is fully straightened, it’s time for the neutralizer, which works its magic in 10 minutes and speeds up the straightening process. “After 10 minutes, the neutralizer is rinsed out and the hair is blow-dried without using styling brushes, as the hair is already straight at this point. To complete the look before leaving the salon, the hair is straightened again.”
What Is The Japanese Hair Straightening?
“Benefits include saving time on styling or straightening hair, easy maintenance and better condition,” says Tomoyuki. Typically, hair comes out shinier and softer.
“Hair looks naturally smooth, not tight or stiff,” adds Chi. “It’ll look like it’s had a collagen boost—healthier, stronger, and fuller. Hair stays smooth when wet and frizz-free when wet. You can just wash and go .”
Tomoyuki says the treatment is permanent and results can be prolonged with maintenance. In other words, you’ll have to wait for the treatment to fully grow out before you can go back to your natural hair, so it’s a big commitment. “It doesn’t wash out like blow-dry Brazilians, and it doesn’t break down like a keratin treatment,” adds Chi. “It lasts up to 12 months, and the root touch-up is six to 12 months, but it depends on your hair type.”

The process is quite different. Tomoyuki says Japanese hair straightening works on the inside of the strands, while Chi says keratin treatments or Brazilian blow dryers affect the outer layer and fade over time. Japanese hair straightening lasts from six to 12 months, while stylists give keratin treatments a duration of about two to four months.
Tomoyuki says it depends on the length and type of hair, but it’s still a long and arduous process. “Usually four hours and up,” she says, while Chi has known some treatments to last eight hours. If you’re worried about the weather, it’s worth booking an initial consultation with a hairdresser who should be able to tell you more.
The process is a labor of love and the results don’t come cheap. Like keratin treatments and Brazilian blow-drys, this depends on the length of your hair, but a consultation with a stylist will determine how much you can pay, as it will vary from salon to salon. Prices at Tomoyuki & Co. start from £360. At Hairlux, prices start from £250.
Since Japanese hair straightening uses a chemical process to restore the hair, it can cause damage to colored hair. Tomoyuki says that those with lighter hair above level five (dyed and bleached blonde hair) may not benefit from the treatment, but this also applies to hair that has been dyed darker. “Some clients have dyed their hair dark and think their hair is healthy, but it doesn’t work that way,” adds Tomoyuki. During your consultation, let the stylist know if your hair has been dyed so they can assess the proneness to damage.

Whatever you do, don’t wash your hair right away. “Customers should wait 48 hours before their next wash,” says Chi. “During this time, their new straight hair should be kept down, so there are no headbands, hair clips or accessories that can distort the strands.” Sweaty workouts should also be avoided and clients are advised to keep hair completely dry.
Tomoyuki also recommends using a high-quality amino acid shampoo to moisturize your hair. Try Kiehl’s Amino Shampoo, £19.50 or Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Moisturizing Shampoo, £21.50.
Currently all hairdressers are closed according to government guidelines due to the coronavirus. When they reopen, head over to the Treatwell booking app to find a salon offering Japanese grooming near you.

Is it permanent? How to care for your hair after treatment Where to find the Japanese fix Frequently asked questions
Japanese hair straightening is a popular method of straightening curly or wavy hair. Many women with curly hair like it and it can create a stylish and elegant style. But it comes with some controversy. Unfortunately, it can wreak havoc on hair if done incorrectly or by an inexperienced or uneducated stylist. For this reason, it’s important to understand all the pros and cons as you consider whether it’s right for you.
Japanese Hair Straightening: What To Know
Also known as thermal reconstruction, the Japanese fix was all the rage in the early 2000s in New York City. For curly-haired ladies who have long envied silky smooth strands, it seemed like a wonderful procedure. Walk into the salon with curly hair, drop $400 to $800 on hours of perming and straightening, and come out with straight, super-straight hair that stays straight until it grows out. The treat was so popular that it crossed shores and became a hit on the West Coast and then in major cities across the country.
Soon after, the Brazilian game (also called the “Brazilian explosion”) hit the shores. It became the hair straightening treatment of the moment and the popularity of the Japanese method faded. A couple
