Man Podger David recently made these DIY cakes for a Christmas party and I love them! There’s no reason why you can’t use them at your upcoming party or even on a daily basis.
David also created a design that can be taken apart for storage and flipped over if you want a slightly different look. Isn’t that cool? Let me tell you how David made this wooden Christmas craft.
I throw a big Christmas party every year. It really is a dessert party, and I’m having it because I can eat so many desserts. It’s very festive! And every year I think, “Some DIY cake stands will raise the bar” – but aside from the cost, I always think about storage.
Cake stands are great when you have a cake or two to display, but putting them away can be a bit inconvenient. So I came up with a design that doesn’t produce
How To Style A Tiered Tray With Decorations
I chose the table leg based on all the rounded details because I thought they would make interesting and varied legs for my DIY cake stands. Easy to separate the leg in three places – I changed the length so my stands are different heights.
I then marked the center of each tile and using a drill bit the same size as my dowel, drilled a ½ inch deep hole.
I then drilled the appropriate holes in the top and bottom center of each of my stems – also ¾ inch deep. (I wasn’t able to take a picture and drill, but you should clamp or hold the stem firmly at this point.)
If you do, make sure you drill the holes as straight as possible. If you’re using a drill bit, place a piece of blue painter’s tape over the drill bit to mark the depth so you know how deep to go when drilling.

Then I cut the dowel into 1 1/4″ pieces. I put dowels in the holes to make sure everything is even and looks great (just needed a little more drilling on the left side).
Then I sanded thoroughly and primed with a latex spray primer (I think it’s easier to work with spray paint when you’re dealing with curved details like the stem here). I then painted them white and then sealed them with acrylic satin sealer.
I let them dry then turned them over, traced the top on the back of my scrapbook paper and cut it out and the mod was gone. A few layers of Mod Podge sealing later and you’re done! Three DIY cakes cost about $20!
* Confession. I bought a couple of cupcakes for this last shot. But the project was a bit late and I ate them. All. I’m not proud of this, but please.

And since I don’t glue the pegs, I can take them apart for storage. If you don’t have a space issue like me, you can use screws where I used dowels.
Also, as I was modifying the tops, I realized that you can also modify the “bottom” with different paper and invert them if you want a different color scheme. It’s actually six DIY cake stands. I was in heaven at the cake stands!
Good idea. For the stands at craft fairs, I use cake stands, but it would be lovely to take them apart and make them easier to transport.
Can you put food on Mod Podge? Or maybe line with baking paper first?
How To Choose The Best Cake Stand For Your Wedding Cake
Hi cat. Mod Podge is non-toxic, but I think it’s best to use parchment or something else to be on the safe side

But if you try to use both sides I think you run the risk of the bottom falling off if you lift the plate. Dabney is Southern born, raised in New England, now a Midwesterner. Her dog Grim is part terrier, part basset hound, part dust mop.
