My little sister got married on November 15th, 2014. She went to my parents in September to tell them that she and her fiance had decided to get married…in 8 weeks! My grandfather was diagnosed with multiple atrophy of the system and he really wanted to be at her wedding, so you better wait a year or two, as they had already planned when they got engaged, they set the date. It was originally going to be a very small affair, but it’s hard to keep it small when you have a large and very close family, so we ended up with 56 guests in total. We met at a planning meeting and found a space at Twiggs – An American Gastropub, a trendy local restaurant. Once we found a space, my sister Courtney, my aunt Reney and I started sharing ideas via group text. Once we figured out the direction she wanted to take with her wedding, we set up another planning meeting with my mom, sisters, aunt, and BFF sisters. In that one meeting we went over a lot of details and gave everyone some work and I was identified as the go-to person. So what was the end result? A beautiful event that was perfect for Courtney and her new husband Ion.

The wedding colors were red and black, so we chose white tablecloths, a black square and red napkins. It really set the mood at the tables.

I have to give a big shout out to FloraCraft, whose Make It: Fun Design Team I’m part of. Once we decided on the main elements we wanted to create, I contacted FloraCraft as they had ALL the supplies we needed to make them spectacular.

The great thing is that these centerpieces are 100% DIY and anyone can make them! I will share a quick tutorial with you soon.

We decided on two centerpiece styles – the latter using Hurricane Vases and Diamond Wrap Candles. I just hot glued Diamond Wrap around a cheap pillar candle. The hot glue didn’t stick to the wax so it took some trimming. Once that was done, I glued the candles to the jars. Layer them on top of the circular mirror and spread rose petals around the base to tie in with the other centerpieces. We also placed three votives to complete the look.

The center table had a smaller version of the square vases and a beautiful metal “A” (for Courtney’s new last name) that I spray painted a shimmery silver to match the rest of the decor.

We had quite big plans for decorations for the venue which included tulle and Christmas lights, however there were only a few sockets in the room and NONE were centrally located. We ended up just wrapping the columns in tulle and creating a ceremony arch with tulle, string lights and three oval frames that I hung from the ceiling with black ribbon. It didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted, but all the guests commented on how much they loved the function.

I also created a cupcake stand for mini cupcakes that looked so sparkly and gorgeous! I’ll share a tutorial on how I did it soon, I promise!

We found some fun donut ring favors and knew they would be the perfect favors for this bagel-filled wedding! I recreated this idea using the Cricut Explore to cut out diamonds, glue them to toothpicks, and place them in mini powder cones.

We crumpled them up and tied them with ribbon and attached a tag that said “WE WILL let you know what we’d do without you!” Courtney is the queen of puns, so this was the perfect favor for her wedding! I also planned the programs – as the wedding was a bit unconventional we wanted the guests to have an idea of what to expect.

Because the space was tight, we waited until after the ceremony while the couple was taking photos to set up the photo booth. I made a bunch of props and people really got into it! We got some really nice pictures of the guests which I shared on Facebook the next day. No joke, I’ve seen them pop up in my feed for a week and a lot of people have changed them to their profile pictures. It was so much fun to watch and I know my sister loved how much fun everyone had! If you’re on a budget, you don’t need a full photo booth—just add a fun back bench hung from a curtain and mount your camera on a tripod. I had a remote for my camera but it wouldn’t behave so the rest just walked around to take a picture whenever someone was in the “booth”. It was no fuss and I gave my sister some fun photos to remember her special day by.

We had the table set when people first entered the decorated mailbox I made for the cards and escort cards. We also added one of the centerpieces to the table and my mom bought a faded frame to put the wedding invitation in.

In and placed on the table – and AMAZING! Neither I nor the photographer managed to photograph the entire table.

As I mentioned before, the venue was small for the crowd we had, so we didn’t have a DJ. The room had an amazing sound system and my sister made a playlist for dinner music, a playlist for first dances and a dance playlist for when the party really started. She appointed a friend as MC and I wrote the program and exactly what we wanted her to say. This all worked out great and saved some dough. There was a beautiful grand piano in the room and the pianist played from the moment the guests arrived, through the ceremony and then during the appetizer/cash bar, which really created such a welcoming atmosphere.

I was the point of contact for the venue, so if they had questions, needed someone to talk to, or had problems, I was the person to talk to. I kept everything on track and made sure all the vendors had what they needed and we were on time. It was a long day (and a day of prep the day before) but it was so much fun and I loved being such a big part of my beautiful little sister and her handsome new husband’s big day!

If you are a bold bride, put red and black in your wedding dress: choose a gorgeous black or red wedding dress. It can be any design: A-line, ball gown, strapless, mermaid or any other. Try a sheer bodice with lace appliqué, go for embellishments, lace and piping – such bold color always means something fancy, so don’t be afraid to stand out. Avoid adding contrasting jewelry and accessories to make your look more modern and updated. If you’re a groom who wants to rock black and deep red, go for an all-black look – with a shirt, suit and tie, or vice versa – a deep red tuxedo with black lapels and a black shirt and bow tie.
