The Bible provides little detail about the characters’ backgrounds and motivations. Midrash is where it comes in; One of the functions of this type of rabbinical literature is to capture biblical characters.

Often, medieval scholars seek to provide a “back story” for a biblical figure. The sages were forced to explain the revelations of God and men by drawing on their inner lives. Midrashim take roughly drawn biblical characters and turn them into archetypal figures we can easily recognize.

Some of the most famous midrashim are the stories about Abraham and Sarah. These midrashim include stories in the Jewish tradition that most people don’t even know are not in the Torah.

One Thing To Help You Learn The Bible

When the Torah introduces Avram (as Abraham was originally named), he is already a great man. The Torah says that he was born to a man named Terah in Ur of the Chaldeans, and Aram left Ur with his father, brother, and their families and went to Haran (Genesis 11:27-32). The first word God spoke to Avram came at the age of 75 when Avram was told to leave Canaan and go to Canaan (Genesis 12).

What is special about Avram/Ibrahim? What are the characteristics that led God to choose this person over all others? The middle stories of Avram’s youth provide the answer. They describe Avram as having logical gifts and spiritual insight that enabled him to see the inconsistency between the idolatrous practices around him and the theological claims associated with them.

According to the Talmud (Baba Batra 91a), Abraham’s birth was predicted by King Nimrod’s astrologers, who saw the child as a threat to Nimrod’s kingdom. Tara hides young Avram in a cave to save him from death. Avram came out of the cave at the age of three, he saw that there is a God who created nature. He worships this god.

In another midrashim (Genesis Rabbah 38, Tana Debei Eliyahu), we find Abraham in his father’s shop selling idols. Abraham showed his father the foolishness of worshiping the idols he was making.

In the most famous of these stories, Abraham created a “commotion” among the idols; And now he said that the big idol destroyed others to claim it as his own. When Tara returns to the store, he refuses to believe the story. After all, idols are not alive! Abraham caught his father with this logical trick: Why do you worship the work of your hands?

In another similar story, we see another example of Abraham using idolatry to convince others of his lies:

He said “Rabbi Hiya…Tara made idols”. Once he left and left Prophet Ibrahim to sell (Idols) in the place. A man came to him and asked him to buy one (Ibrahim) ‘How old are you? When he was 60 years old, he worshiped an idol even for one day!

In this midrahim, Abraham is a wise, intelligent boy (and later man) who is not afraid to challenge the authorities on basic religious questions in his community. Abraham did not believe God because God spoke to him or confirmed it to him. But, it shows that Abraham found God himself.

These remarkable qualities made Abraham a leader even before God spoke to him. In Genesis 12:5, we learn that Abraham went to Canaan “to those who [asu] did in Haran.” “Spirit” originally means “soul”, but is used to refer to humans (ie those with souls). However, how can the text say that Abraham “made” souls?

Modern scholar Everett Fox suggests the meaning of “the people they made themselves” (the five books of Moses) – a form of adoption. This definition has been used by previous commentators and
