This type of scar occurs when the skin does not return to its normal shape after rapid growth due to pregnancy, weight gain, weight loss or puberty. More than 50 percent of women experience stretch marks during pregnancy.

How Can You Prevent Stretch Marks While Losing Weight?

Stretch marks are scars or disfigured lesions. They are also called striae, striae distensae (SD), striae atrophicans and striae gravidarum.

Hangovers are not physically dangerous, but they can cause self-image problems and anxiety. For some people, stretch marks are a significant cosmetic concern that can affect daily life.

Before stretch marks appear, the skin may be thin and pink. It can also cause irritation or itching.

The marks first develop as wrinkled, raised lines that can be red, purple, pink, reddish brown, or dark brown, depending on the skin color. The lines eventually fade and flatten and change to a silver color over time.

How To Deal With Stretch Marks In Teenagers

The skin consists of three main layers. Stretch marks form in the dermis, or middle layer, when connective tissue is stretched beyond its elastic limits. This is usually caused by rapid expansion or contraction of the skin.

As the body grows, the connective fibers of the dermis slowly stretch to accommodate the slow growth. However, the rapid growth suddenly expands. This causes the dermis to tear, allowing the deeper layers of the skin to be exposed.

Stretch marks eventually fade to a silvery, white, or shiny appearance as pale fat under the skin becomes visible instead of normal blood vessels.

They are more likely to develop and become more severe where there are high levels of circulating cortisone, or when cortisone is applied to the skin. Cortisol, the stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands, is converted to cortisone. It weakens the elastic fibers of the skin.

Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Many risk factors have been linked to the development of stretch marks, but the evidence varies. More research is needed to confirm the causes of stretch marks.

These results may be explained by the greater degree of skin stretching in obese women with older children and age-related changes in skin collagen and connective tissue that affect the likelihood of tearing.

Stretch marks are easily diagnosed based on a skin examination and a review of a person’s medical history.

The doctor will usually ask questions based on signs and symptoms, as well as any medications currently being used or existing medical conditions.

Pregnancy Stretch Marks: Causes, Prevention, And Treatment

Warts are harmless and do not cause medical problems. In rare cases, they may indicate an underlying medical problem that requires treatment or monitoring.

Unless the cause is an underlying condition, your insurer is unlikely to pay for treatment. Stretch marks are seen as a cosmetic complaint.

Creams, gels, lotions and cosmetic surgery have all been suggested as treatments for stretch marks, although there is little medical evidence to support the effectiveness of such treatments.

Stretch marks often fade over time and go unnoticed. For women who develop stretch marks during pregnancy, they usually become less noticeable 6 to 12 months after giving birth.

Makeup can be used to hide stretch marks on more exposed areas of the body when they are more visible.

Some studies have compared the effects of topical treatments with preparations containing no active ingredient or with the effects of no treatment.

These investigations found no statistically significant differences between groups, suggesting that currently available treatment options do not improve or speed the healing process of stretch marks.

They do not pose long-term health risks and treatment is usually aimed at improving the self-image of the person with stretch marks.

Love them, hate them or feel something in between, stretch marks are a natural part of the human body. They are one of the most common side effects of pregnancy, but what exactly do stretch marks do? Will they last forever? And why do they appear wider, longer or darker to some people, but thinner, shorter or lighter to others?

Despite the fact that almost 80% of pregnant women have stretch marks, there are still many questions about them. So whether you’ve noticed stretch marks on your skin during pregnancy or are newly pregnant and curious about what’s in store for your stretched skin, we’ve got the answers to the most common questions about stretch marks.

Unexpected Places To Find Stretch Marks In Pregnancy

“Stretches are cut wounds that appear when our skin stretches too quickly,” says Dr. Carrington, founder of Radiance Women’s Center in Orlando, FL. On average, pregnant women grow between 11 and 40 pounds and about 40 centimeters (15-16 inches) from the pelvic bone to the top of the uterus – which means they go through the skin around your middle in just nine months.

“The sudden change causes collagen and elastin (the proteins that give our skin its strength and flexibility) to break down, leaving an irregular striated pattern,” explains Dr. Carrington.

So what you’re seeing is actually scarring, although not the same scarring you get after a deep wound or major surgery. Stretch marks that occur during pregnancy are most likely to appear on the stomach and chest, but you can also find them on the thighs, hips, underarms… or anywhere on the skin.

No! They’re more common in women who become pregnant because of hormones and rapid skin stretching, but stretch marks also commonly appear during periods of rapid growth or weight fluctuations, says Dr. Carrington.

They can appear in any gender and at any age, especially during puberty, and are not necessarily a sign that someone has been pregnant before.

When stretch marks first appear, you may experience an itch, much like a scar, but moisturizers such as creams or body oils usually help. And any irritation is likely to go away very quickly. Besides, stretch marks are completely harmless and completely normal.

If they are bothersome to you, all you can do is try to reduce their appearance with one or more of the various treatment options out there, including topical and/or systemic treatments.

If you try a topical treatment like a cream, gel or oil, there’s no guarantee of perfect results, warns Dr. Carrington, despite what many brands may claim. But the more you use it, the better your results will be. Dermatologists recommend applying early and often topical treatments to your stretch marks—starting early in pregnancy (before stretch marks appear in the postpartum period) and daily.

Signs You Might Get Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

What current products work best? Most doctors and dermatologists recommend products with hyaluronic acid (promotes collagen production) or retinoids/vitamin A (just be careful and remember that retinoids are not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding). Studies have found no evidence to support home remedies such as olive oil, cocoa butter, aloe vera, or vitamin E.

Another option is systemic treatment. Things like ultrasound, radiofrequency, laser therapy, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels can reduce the appearance of stretch marks faster, but they are more expensive. But no matter which treatment option you choose to reduce your stretch marks, Dr. Carrington recalls, “No drug or procedure will completely get rid of them.”

What if your stretch marks are a few years old? Although they fade over time (usually turning pink to silver), older stretch marks, with treatment, will reduce their appearance.

There’s no guarantee where, how much, or even if stretch marks will appear during pregnancy, and if you’ve already been pregnant once, that doesn’t mean your skin will behave the same way for each additional pregnancy. It may be that your next pregnancy will no longer cause stretch marks because your skin is already stretched. Or maybe, says Dr. Carrington, you will gain weight or otherwise carry during your next pregnancy, causing your skin to stretch more or in a different direction and create additional stretch marks. Unfortunately there is no real way to tell until the spots appear.
