Getting A Job As A Photographer – If you’re looking for a job, you need a portfolio. Of course a good-looking resume with good credentials and references will sign contracts, but employers and clients want proof.
How do I know? Well, I’ve been on both sides of the table. I’ve done a lot of job interviews over the years (some freelance). I was in charge of the company and now I am with my company.

No one is going to find a creative career based solely on word of mouth or good grades in school (but both things help). If you’re applying for a job in the creative industry, you’ll need a portfolio.

A good credit is a personal statement about a designer, photographer or artist. As such, no one-size-fits-all approach will work for everyone. A good tip is to look at examples of other people’s roles. Many schools (especially art schools) have student exhibitions where graduates show their work. Other colleges may have career fairs. If you are in school, start attending these events as early as possible. For graduates, you can find many portfolios online on the internet. The most important step here is to look carefully before you need a portfolio to create one that you like.
A resume is a collection of work activities that can be presented to prospective employers or clients. It should show the diversity of the person behind it, but it doesn’t have to show everything. Most people need their portfolio in at least two ways. For example, a photographer may have a traditional glossy paper book, but may also want an online presence. Be sure to review everything you will need to present your work to potential employers.
You want to show your diversity with your portfolio. Even if you only do one type of project at your current job, make sure it’s different. For example, you can work for a manufacturing company, but don’t just fill out work samples from your work. Students are very guilty of putting their personal interests in their work (most users are not interested in superheroes, street racing or anime…sadly disappointing).
You want a number of sample jobs, preferably for real customers. You might think that it is impossible for a student to find “customers”, but it is not. Charities, religious groups, or non-profit organizations can use dedicated resources. You can submit a design for free, in exchange for 25 copies of the completed class (always included) and a cover letter for your portfolio. Another place to turn is professional (or off-site) training. Be prepared to work for little (or no) money to get a world-class experience. This greatly increases the perceived value of your portfolio.

There is such a thing as “too much”. While you want diversity, you don’t want your portfolio to be longer than the latest phone book. It’s important to eliminate non-star examples from your portfolio. This can be done through peer review or professional judgment. Ask a friend or colleague to look at your work. Ask them to choose their likes and dislikes. Repeat this with a few people and the wrong approach will quickly become apparent.
It’s a bad idea to fill your portfolio with random projects. Unless you work for a company, nobody wants to see “unusual” Apple ads. Fake projects scream lack of experience. It’s great if there are projects you’ve had a big hand in (including concept, writing, photography, layout, etc.). Just copying others will not get you the job.

Unfortunately, you never finished. No job is 100% legal. You should always be ready for the next question. That said, it’s not a good idea to work on your portfolio at work. Be sure to update your portfolio at least every 6 months. Some media (like slides) are easy to update and you should be ready.
Always keep a copy of your most recent work and try to find a copy or copy. Professionals also have to collect their work properly. If you are on the job, make sure you check the employee handbook for work. Some jobs require a license before retaining a work sample. Also, when building your portfolio, be sure to include the companies you’ve worked for.
Remember, if you want to work hard… you have to be willing to do the work.
