I was never a big fan of DH. Until recently I followed the three divisions of the National League more than anything else. While some may be more vocal about the doom the DH will bring to baseball, to me it’s a reminder of how things seem to work today. Like when my wife, a teacher, told me she had to “raise the grades” of the kids at school because the principal wanted more students to graduate. In baseball we do the same thing: because we want more hits and pitchers don’t seem to know how to hit anymore, we take the pitcher out of the lineup. The next thing is we ban movement because it removes hits, we increase bases to have more stolen bases, etc.: we speed up the game.
Maybe, if you’ll allow me to paraphrase it a bit and convey my own opinion, it’s more like “I don’t like it” or “meh…I don’t care”. If we look at the players who got the bats at the DH position in 2022, we can say that only 2 teams reserved a spot for a player who otherwise could or could make the bat: Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Angels and, the worst DH in all of MLB, Nelson Cruz with the Washington Nationals.
Seven other teams gave the DH primarily to a player as well: JD Martinez for the Red Sox, Bryce Harper for the Phillies (he was DH-ing due to a long-term arm injury), Trey Mancini for the Orioles, Andrew McCutchen with the Brewers, Daniel Vogelbach with the Pirates, Miguel Cabrera with the Detroit Tigers and Franmil Reyes for the Guardians. All of the other 21 teams basically use the DH as a rotation spot, to give guys the bats and/or some rest from playing the field.

We can see why for owners the DH is often a sucker for the MLBPA’s requirements: it just doesn’t add much value to baseball. Each team uses it in their own way: to shed an expensive contract at that position, to use it for the rotation to give guys the at-bats at the highest level, or to offset the hitting of that outfielder who provides great defense but no offense .
