We recently had the honor of decorating a Hawaiian themed wedding reception and it was so much fun! The event was for a small group, but the host has a beautiful outdoor space where we were able to host the event.

We used a personalized sign from SimplySweetDesigns to welcome our guests. The print was done on a Costco photo and then we placed the sign on foam and added a small tropical green tree balloon wreath.
Non Traditional Wedding Shower Themes
The owner was very open to all our suggestions, but he liked the idea of doing something other than the usual cake for dessert. We suggested using a donut wall and adding custom vinyl and balloon decorations. Also, to complete the Hawaiian theme, we made custom yellow donuts from Legendary Donuts and added paper toppers that I made with my Silhouette Cameo electric cutter (Pineapple Cupcake Design by Amy Robison). I made this for pineapple cupcakes at a Hawaiian hula party a few years ago, so it was easy to make for donuts.
In the decorations I tried to use playful and tropical colors with Polynesian inspired textures to create a Hawaiian vibe without being too young or edgy. I can give you some event inspiration in these adorable thermal wipes from Mary Mary. I continued the decor in shades of pink and yellow, adding lots of faux tropical greenery, fabric and wood.
Balloons are a must have for this event. We decided to use a round stand with rings and add balloons in different asymmetrical ways. It is beautifully photographed with a well-manicured lawn in the background. To get this combination of balloon colors, I started by purchasing two sets of children’s balloons from Gustalife on Amazon. The set had a good mix of white, white, pink, fuchsia and yellow. I then attached the rug with Tuftex Coral, Tuftex Blush, Qualatex Lemon Chiffon, Qualatex Blush, Qualatex Coral, and Qualatex Rose. Some of the colors once cast were very similar, but small differences helped the colors blend more harmoniously. I also found that the kit didn’t have the amount of 5″ balloons we wanted to work with, so most of the added balloons were 5″.
Candela’s Artisan Treats created these adorable Hawaiian themed cookies for the event. I love pineapple, hibiscus flowers and palm leaves. Her work is amazing and fun!

For the flowers, we wanted to create a tropical, Hawaiian feel without ordering expensive Hawaiian flowers. The host also asked that we stay away from lilies due to allergies, so we bought Lang’s Moments foam and silk artificial flower stems. I added faux orchid stems and then bought some bright colored fresh roses from Costco to create arrangements that I also added faux stems and greenery to. I finished off the arrangement with some foam plumeria flowers that I heated on wire and stuck into the humid oasis. For less than $100 I was able to create 3 beautiful floral elements in the same color scheme.
We found some mid-range faux green lace on Amazon for guests to wear and then added a printable framed sign from DIY Party Studio, the design of which is linked below. One of my favorite elements of the party were the golden pineapples! There are lots of fun things to buy, but I decided to see how well a pineapple would hold up to spray paint. I found out that they coat very well and they make a great decorative piece.
We created this awesome balloon fence that attaches to the railing near the outdoor seating and the balloons are to the left of the back balloon. I love how balloons instantly brighten up any space!
My husband created this donut wall a few years ago for our daughter’s 12th birthday and we have used it many times. I used my Silhouette Cameo electric cutting machine to create a custom vinyl on the top of the donut.

The photo backdrop was just a circle of balloons, but these fun Hawaiian photos make the photo booth fun for guests.
This thermal photo frame comes with a prop kit. It had to be mounted on a piece of foam I bought at the Dollar Tree.
I added fun “occasional” tags to some packaged cookies from Candela’s Sweet Treats for guests to pick up. Also, the host found these adorable mini honey gifts with the words “To Bee” in a white confetti box.
We didn’t choose a formal table setting for this shower, but we think these elements combined with the floral and airy, blush runners and wicker elements make for a beautiful table. Octagonal dark pink palm leaf coasters and doilies by Mary Mary. They are both disposable but designed for beautiful vintage glasses.
