“People want shortcuts,” says Joel Rush, a clinical nutritionist at MD Anderson. “Cleanliness and fasting give us rules that are easy to follow. But as a way to lose weight, they fall flat.
Juice Cleanse Faq
Cleanses, detox diets, and fasts have a wide range of guidelines depending on which plan you follow. A cleanse may require participants to drink only juice or avoid certain foods. Fasting may require patients to abstain from food for a period of time.
And while a cleanse or fast may help you lose weight initially, there are many risks associated with these fad diets. Here are four things you should know about cleansing, detoxing, and fasting.
Toxins are chemicals that have no place in our diet. You can get poison through food, your skin, or the air. Normally, your body removes it on its own. Most people don’t need a cleanse to get it out of their bodies.
“Our kidneys do a great job of eliminating toxins. Our livers do a great job. Our colon does a great job,” says Rush.

Before starting a cleanse or detox, talk to your doctor to see if there’s anything you really need to do.
“Whenever you eliminate certain factors from your diet, you can lose weight initially,” says Rush.
Exercise plays a key role in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing your risk of cancer. But if you’re fasting or cleansing, you may not be getting all the calories and energy you normally need to exercise.
If you’re burning your calories on a juice cleanse, make sure you’re drinking nutritious juices. In other words, consider whether you’re getting enough carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and electrolytes. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor. They can help you understand if cleaning is safe for you and your lifestyle.

“Cleansing and fasting may seem like a quick fix,” says Rush. “But a good way to control weight is to develop healthy eating habits.”
“You’re more likely to see long-term success following these tips if you’re using a cleanse or a speed boost,” says Rush.
Purity and fasting provide us with principles that are easy to follow. But as a weight-loss method, they fall flat.

Ill Side Effects Of A Juice Cleanse
Ernesto Rojas lost 70 pounds and wanted to maintain his new weight. He decided to eat more vegetables and fruits. I am a big fan of juicing. I love this !! And since so many of you have asked me to explain it, I’ve explained what my juice cleanse looks like from start to finish!
First, let me say that I am not a nutritionist and I do not claim to know everything. I just know how my body reacts to juice and it feels good to lose 5+ pounds when I’m feeling bloated and cranky after heavy holiday indulgence. I also know it’s not for everyone – so if you’re totally anti-juicing, may I suggest you check out this healthy quinoa salad I’ve been whipping up!
As I mentioned above, I am not a nutritionist so you should definitely consult one if needed. That said, my personal experience with juicing is as follows. Juicing gives my body a mega dose of nutrients that always make me feel good. It allows my body to reset when it comes to digestion. The extra dose of vitamins boosts my immune system and gives me more energy than usual.
It is entirely up to you. I get best results when I juice for 3-4 days. You should keep in mind that on top of these 3-4 juicing days, there is a pre and post period which is very important. So if I juice for 3 days, that actually means the cleanse is 9 days… because the 3 days before the cleanse and the 3 days after the cleanse is the schedule I follow.

If you’re new to juicing, I’d say start with a 3-day cleanse. It’s not easy – and you want to make sure you don’t always go crazy! So I vote to start on the short side and see how your body reacts. And definitely, don’t skip the pre- and post-cleanse – I’ve done it before and it’s so hard without a pre/post schedule.
I usually prepare for 3 days followed by a cleanse. I cut out basically everything except fruits and vegetables. To prepare myself, I eat salads loaded with a variety of vegetables, drink herbal teas full of herbs and hydrate with plenty of water. No meat, no cheese, no pasta… you get the idea.
Let’s talk about tools. I have a brawl slow juicer that I love. Horum is also amazing. I like “slow” juicers because you actually extract more fiber and nutrients from the fruits and vegetables which gives you more pulp and you get a slightly thicker juice and all that jazz aka more fiber!
During my 3-4 days of “juicing” I drink about 6 glasses of juice and 6 glasses of water a day. I make 3 types of juice and for lack of a better name, I call them by color: green juice (3 glasses per day), red juice (1 glass per day), orange juice (2 glasses per day ). And then I close the day with my strawberry almond milk.

After a juice cleanse I slowly ease my body back into normal eating. I eat lots of raw vegetables to start with and then slowly work my way into fruits, fish, quinoa, etc. I usually try to stay away from meat for a few more days because that’s how I roll.
Day 1 is always the hardest for me because I’m “head” hungry. Which basically means I think I’m hungry… but I’m really not. I am tired and want to eat. The truth is, I’m packing my body with so many micronutrients, it’s enough to run. I just start the day dreaming of a grilled cheese sandwich and then I go crazy. So if you’re juicing, you should probably stay away from the food section of Pinterest. 🙂
By day 2 I feel like a million bucks. I sleep well at night, ready to wake up in the morning. (I literally jump out of bed and Thomas thinks I’m a crazy man) Okay and this sounds weird, but you actually see things more clearly. Not figuratively… I mean literally. Things are fast and crisp and you’re ready to take on the day!
So… you might be wondering why I juice? Well, I love it. I do it every 3-4 months to reset and rest my body. And have you guys ever seen that movie, Fat Sick and Almost Dead? It’s kind of life changing. I would highly recommend it if you are into that sort of thing. This is super impressive.
