After the pandemic subsided, wedding industry watchers predicted D.C. would have its busiest year for weddings in decades. Did that end up happening?

The numbers: We conducted an informal survey of dozens of local industry professionals. Nearly half reported booking 25 percent more weddings than usual this year. In reality, the increase is likely to be much larger: many have reduced the number of events because their schedules are full. “It’s the first time I’ve had to turn down so many deals,” says Sarah-Jane Bennett of Planners on Retainer. “I heard there was going to be a big boom, but it was still bigger than I expected.”

Impact: Mix, fully reserved dealers refer pairs to other reserved dealers. The lack of manpower is also a big problem. “The number of inquiries has been astronomical,” says Renae Ouellette of Ridgewells Catering. “And in the past they were usually only on Saturdays and never in July or August. People don’t care anymore, they just want to get married.”

Additional factors: Inflation is one: buyers expect prices to stay the same while costs rise. Additionally, event planning deadlines are tighter due to the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic, and disappointed couples who have postponed their ceremonies may be impatient. “Between industry shortages, labor issues and the right to delay marriage,” says Roberts & Co. According to Events’ Tabitha Roberts, “Weddings are a changing season.”
