Printing On Vellum Paper What I Learned – Using vellum to transfer designs to fabric is a great permanent method. It works with sublimation pens, so I’ll show you how!
This is one of the techniques I recommend in my book Colorful Fun Embroidery, and I use it in many of my projects there. I prefer to use the permanent design transfer method on larger projects because it means I can spend my time sewing without worrying about the design disappearing! For my book, I use Sublime Stitching transfer pens, which are available in black, blue, green and red. They have a very thin tip, perfect for transferring designs with precision. Recently, I discovered the Prym Sublimation Pen, which has a slightly thicker nib, but is a good alternative (and is also slightly cheaper than the Sublime Stitching pen).

Sublime Stitching and Prym pens are both available from my bathroom, along with transfer paper – yay! This is a very good quality 100gsm paper and you get an instruction sheet and 10 transfer sheets with each pack. But in this blog post, I will introduce it to you in more detail and show you exactly how it works in my small video tutorial on You Tube (see below).

The main thing to remember is that you need to transfer the design back for it to work, and any marks on the vellum will be permanently transferred to the fabric. Take the time to draw on the paper and avoid mistakes that the sewing can’t fix, because mistakes on the rug will show up on the fabric.
Reprint or copy your design. Use washi tape (or tape that cracks easily) to a flat surface before placing a piece of brown paper on top. Also firmly glue the brown paper underneath. Carefully draw out the design, using a roller to draw any straight lines so that they are very fine. Just take your time to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Iron the fabric you want to transfer the design to. Place a regular flat tea towel (by which I mean one without any lumpy debris in the fabric!) on the ironing board with the fabric on top. Place the paper on top of the fabric, design side up. Then iron the design using a very cool iron without steam until it goes over. Use a heat setting somewhere between 1-2 points (silk wool), no higher or the paper will warp and crack. Test a corner or edge first to check – you can see this at about 6:48 in my video tutorial. Try not to move the paper or the design will be unclear. And remember to always keep your fingers crossed!
Check if the design is visible on the fabric by lifting the edge of the paper while ironing. Yes yes! When you are satisfied with the transfer, you can remove the paper. You are ready to start sewing. Just remember to try to cover the lines while you sew as they are permanent and otherwise will be visible on the finished product.

If this happens, your iron is a little too hot! If you just tested a corner, you may be able to save the design, so let your iron cool down and try again. If it goes over the design, you have to start on a new page.
If your design looks like the right way and the other way around, you may just be ironing the side you painted on! Flip it over and try again. Remember to reverse the tracing and iron the correct way on the garment.

The roll paper will be loaded into your printer like regular paper. You may need to make sure the vellum is the right weight to hold the ink in your printer.
Adjust the printer to a setting that uses as little ink as possible that transfers to the mat. You can choose different settings in inkjet and laser printers, also check paper weight settings (if available) and select transparency.
Choose to print the photo you want to print. Make sure your print fits the vellum, and size accordingly.
Then proceed to print the digital print onto vellum using your graphics program’s image viewing application.

Leave the printed paper in the printer for the next 10-15 minutes. Or lift it carefully and lay it out on a flat surface to dry.
Although it may look more flexible or thicker on paper, it is not too difficult to handle. Kraft paper requires special care, instructions for use and the following tips to bring out its best properties for you.

There was a question in the comments last week about using jetvellum ink with an Epson XP15000 printer. To show you how I print on vellum and transparency, I created a page in Illustrator with an issue and a title, and attached it to a blown-up photo of one of my cats. After testing two different types of paper with my XP15000, this is the best setting for Inkjet Vellum + Transparency Inkjet:
I’ve found that “rear tray” seems to work best (I’ve had more examples of printers not reading “main tray” with paper in the tray). If the printer didn’t read that there was paper in the “rear tray”, I added a few more pages and that seemed to help.
I also found that selecting “Auto Select” for “Media Type” along with “Normal” worked best for both papers. I think when you choose “best” it adds too much ink to each paper to handle.
