However, their achievements over the years would not have been nearly as appreciated without the support of friends and family.

The excitement for the celebration had been building for months, not only for the couple, but also for those who could attend. Friends and family represented nearly every state in the eastern United States, from the coast of Georgia, to the coast of Massachusetts; California traveled the farthest.
Last week’s late-season snow and drizzle gave way to glorious sunshine and Carolina blue skies. Upon arrival at the Grand Hall, a renovated 1900s textile factory, guests are greeted with champagne and signature drinks. Butterfly prawns (stuffed with mozzarella, basil, tomato and garlic), sous vide chicken mousse (with tomato and rose petals) and mushrooms (stuffed with pork, brie, baked apple and banana bread) on a crisp are served throughout the cocktail hour…
The rustic industrial space was transformed into a royal banquet hall. Gold chiffon fabric was hung from exposed wooden posts, then draped over exposed brick walls, and finally resting on polished concrete floors. Regency-style crystal chandeliers hang above the king’s table, sending their elegant light to the gold and crystal accessory table below. Meanwhile, the couple’s crest was framed against a bright accent background.
Tables were accented with purple chiffon, while guest chairs were draped with ruby red silk ribbons carefully tied to display custom embossings of the couple’s crests. The Crystal Bouquet Tower features enchanting orbs of an assortment of roses, hydrangeas, irises, gerberas and snapdragons gently reaching towards the romantic flame of the candle below.

There was no doubt that the host couple would sit at the king’s table on thrones of red velvet fabric and gold-embossed wood. Their stems were custom made, Russian crystal with various patterns of ruby red and gold trim. The groomsmen soon filled these prime seats, not before arriving in their Galaxy Black Maserati sedans, greeting each guest before the main meal began.
On the hand-picked menu was lobster bisque (with mushrooms and smoked kale), grilled mahi-mahi salad (ceviche-style bell and banana peppers, tomatoes, celery, parsley, cilantro, goat cheese mixed in a citrus vinaigrette) over a red wine demi-glace (with mashed potatoes over grilled asparagus and carrots). An opera singer entertains guests between courses.
Bowls complete the formal dining hour. The best men, Christopher’s uncle and Kevin’s father, not only boasted of their pride for the deserving couple, but also revealed what this travel-free relationship journey has meant to them personally. Christopher’s toast expressed the joys and sorrows of having a partner for life when they were not in each other’s presence. Meanwhile, Kevin compares their story to a creative writing class, moving from one chapter to the next, supporting each other as the story unfolds.
The evening’s seventh and most delightful last course stood out as a backdrop behind the couple throughout the evening. A six-tier lemon wedding cake topped with purple flowers topped with buttercream frosting strategically filled with raspberry puree makes for an easy extra serving. But if that wasn’t enough for guests, gourmet cupcakes (apple pie, red velvet, salted caramel and key lime) were served as they left the event.

The Smith-Shumsky story began 12 years ago on March 7, 2003. As cliche as it may sound, our paths crossed by chance that night and probably would never have happened again. On that special night, the center was Carol A. of the First Ward in Charlotte, N.C. was concentrated in the Hoffner Centre. A mixed crowd of around 500 people gathered for another gay bingo. This charity event was a far cry from your grandmother’s bingo game at the local social hall. Each event had its own theme, enhanced by outrageous costumes, songs and dances. With Christopher having recently experienced the end of a previous relationship, and Kevin as introverted as he may have been at the time, they had no intention of leaving the house on Friday night. Christopher forced himself to think, “Why not?!” … while Kevin was slowly kidnapped by the neighbors. Against the odds, we both ended up sitting at the same end of the same table. The rest is our history.
Fast forward through three businesses, three additional degrees, two rental properties, two puppies and all the life that happens in between. We are amazed that this will soon be our 12th year together. Our joke is that it should be at least our 25th! We are lucky to have each other’s winners, good friends and our families as invaluable support. Our achievements are proof that life is a journey and we are truly blessed. Through our private commitment ceremony in Portofino, Italy almost 10 years ago, we patiently waited for marriage equality to be recognized in North Carolina. On October 17, our validation day finally arrived!
So, since March 7, 2015 marks twelve years since we first met, we look forward to seeing everyone experience a Smith-Shumsky celebration that was truly a royal affair!
