Welcome to one place to answer all your wedding dinner style questions for your wedding reception! Frequently asked questions from couples interested in wedding reception styles for dinner service include:
We will answer all these questions as we talk about each dinner service we offer at Preston Barn. The 3 styles we offer are buffet, sit-down and family-style (that’s a question!). We’ll define each, answer these questions, and as a bonus offer some insight into how the Preston Barn staff perfects the art of each dinner service. here we go!
At buffet receptions all the food is on a long table display. Guests are invited to one or two tables at a time, offered a plate, and served by the staff behind the buffet table as they choose the food they like or try them all. This is more casual dining and guests can interact with other guests at the buffet where they may not otherwise interact. Our buffet display is beautifully furnished with copper plates, matching linens and lights, and sometimes we add light decorations to suit your wedding style.
Buffet style is usually the cheapest option because they don’t require a lot of staff. The portions of each option are slightly smaller, but the variety is greater. Couples who choose to eat a buffet are often not only because of the price difference, but because the guests (and themselves) like the idea of trying a little bit of everything. Ever been to a wedding and after being plated dinner, feel jealous of the person who got something different from you? A buffet is a good way to avoid this.

One of the main reasons we see couples going for more expensive dinner styles is that they don’t like the idea of having guests stand in line. Because of this buffets can sometimes take a while, and accessibility for the elderly and disabled is sometimes a concern.
These concerns are understandable, however, we always let our couples know that we have a great system for organizing our buffet reception that can alleviate these concerns. Our maitre’d will physically go to each table for guests at the buffet, we offer to make plated meals for the elderly and disabled (according to the reason, more about this in the “Seating” section), and we will consider counting the guests. Room setup to make the buffet as quick and convenient as possible (for example, a large wedding with 200 guests will have two buffet lines to speed it up). We can make plated meals for the kids, or a kids’ table (and mom will be thankful that she doesn’t have to juggle so many dishes in line)!
At a sit-down dinner party, your guests sit at the table and the server brings them food. It is seen as the most suitable and traditional option, especially for elderly guests. It looks more elegant in the room as there are no lines and the flat looks more beautiful with suitable places as you will find.
