Table Runner For Wedding – Last summer, after months of planning and countless DIY adventures, I got married. From food to dessert, we wanted an unconventional and memorable day. I think it took me about a week into the wedding planning to realize that we had to be very crafty, literally, very crafty, to accomplish the vision I had in my head. In the end, we had the perfect rustic wedding that was uniquely ours. I wanted to share some tips and tricks on how we got there and hopefully help a DIY Pinterest friend or two make their dreams come true.
After much debating what to make for the centerpiece, I finally settled on those beautiful, soft, cascading boho chiffon table runners that we see all over Pinterest. Just what we needed to brighten up our space – literally an empty barn. Etsy lured me in with their tricky pricing, I paid $4 which was actually the price of a napkin (phew! wedding price hikes…).

Let’s talk about how I saved over $450 by making my own chiffon table runner. A full list of ingredients at the bottom of this post (as an added bonus, we sold them after the fact!).

First, make sure you have enough outdoor space or an awesome friend who will let you take over your yard (twice) and spend hours with you in the Texas July heat. I ordered this chiffon on Etsy (smaller on Amazon), and there was enough to make 10 foot table runners for all my tables, plus extra to hang above the dance floor.
One important thing to look out for is the quality of the cheesecloth. The higher the grade, the finer the weave. You sure don’t want your table runners to look like fishing nets… unless you have a beach theme, this could be perfect! I used Grado 90 and it was fluid and smooth.
Now that you have the gauze, you’ll want to cut it before dying, as it’s very easy to manipulate. I had an 8 foot table and added 2 feet for a small overhang making it 10 feet. I want to add a little more because it’s getting a little thin after the process is done. I used a fabric cutting board to measure and my (then) fiancé held the fabric in place. It’s so easy with multiple people!

I used the Rite Dye dye and formulas to create the color I wanted. Remember that it will dry lighter than it looks when wet, and the effectiveness of the color bath will definitely weaken over time. We learned this the hard way and had to re-stain the table runners after the first round as they were almost white.
I thought the color was a bit dark so I added more water to my dye bath. It was a mistake! I didn’t wait long enough to see the color after the swatches dried, thus I painted them all a second time…so…be patient!
You will need a pre-rinse, a dye bath and a post-rinse bucket. We quickly realized that with the number of runners we had to dye, the second color bath was a huge time saver…we ended up going to a pre-rinse bath in the kiddie pool, haha!
First, dip your contents into the first bucket. Next, move your material into the dye bath, making sure the fabric has room to move freely throughout (and thus dye evenly). Stir as needed and let sit for about 10-12 minutes. Finally, rinse the dyed fabric in the last bucket and hang it to dry. That’s all! Rit’s website provides detailed instructions and additional tips here. For more intense colors, you need to repeat the process at least twice.
