It is customary in most Western cultures to place their engagement ring on the ring finger of their left hand. According to legend, it was believed that an important vein – called the vein of love – ran from the left ring finger directly to the heart. Wearing your engagement ring on that hand is a romantic tradition that shows that your loved one is always close to your heart. We love that!
Why I Wear Only A Wedding Band
Until the day of the wedding, you have the engagement ring on your left hand without the worry of a band. But now it’s time to take the vows and exchange wedding rings, so what do you do with your engagement ring?
Many brides keep their engagement ring on their right hand or some even leave it safely at home during the ceremony. This makes it easy to slip your interesting wedding band onto your left hand without having to worry about removing an engagement ring or placing both rings in a specific order. Of course, if you’re comfortable (and have probably had some practice already) you can choose to keep that shiny sparkler on your left hand right where it’s been since it was first clipped.
Traditionally, the wedding band is first placed on the left ring finger and then the engagement ring is placed on top of that. The wedding band is a symbol of the commitment that is bound between you and your partner, so wearing it first is the ring closest to the heart.
While both are traditional ways to wear wedding rings, there are basically no rules about how you choose to wear them after the ceremony. It all depends on your personal taste!
The ‘it’ Ring For Engagements: Toi Et Moi Styles
For example, if you decide that you feel more comfortable wearing your engagement ring with your wedding band first, then bravo! Your confidence looks good on you.
Some brides choose to customize their engagement rings or wedding bands so that the rings match harmoniously, even gluing them together as one solid piece. Others decide to stack multiple wedding bands around the engagement ring to create a nested look.
If your engagement ring and wedding band don’t fit together comfortably, you have the option of wearing a wedding ring on any finger you like! This is a popular choice for those who want a chic wedding band that deserves its own attention.

From the moment you say “yes,” chances are you’ll be rocking a shiny new accessory on your left hand. Insuring an engagement ring may be the last thing on your mind during such happy times, but with big rings come big responsibilities.
Who Buys The Wedding Bands? We Have The Answer
Engagement ring insurance is a contractual risk management tool that protects you against financial consequences in the event of physical loss, theft or damage. Policies usually extend to all jewelry deposited within the scope of coverage and result in either replacement, repair, or cost reimbursement.
What happens if you lose your ring? What if someone steals it? What if it gets damaged? You don’t want anything to happen to that beautiful rock. Whether you accidentally left your engagement ring behind on the beach, lost a stone at the gym or had your ring stolen, ring insurance can provide financial security and peace of mind when you need it most. “If your ring is ever lost, broken or stolen, you’ll be upset if it’s valuable enough to insure,” says insurance expert Tyler Krowierz. “If you think you would be devastated by the sentimental loss, others would be afraid to wear uninsured jewelry, or would be unable to cover the cost to replace the item, it would be wise to make sure your engagement or wedding ring is covered by insurance.”
While whatever happens to your engagement or wedding ring is heartbreaking, knowing that it is properly insured can help soften the blow. Although no two insurance policies are the same, you can rest assured knowing that you have some safeguards and protection against some of the more annoying possibilities that life throws at you. “Jewelers Mutual covers real life with your jewelry,” Krowierz says. “We realize that you can’t always tell how and where your items disappeared, so we cover mysterious disappearances, losses, thefts, damages and global travel.”
We’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to engagement ring insurance and asked Croviorz to make sure you’ll be able to enjoy your ring for years to come—no matter what life throws at your left hand. Here’s everything you need to know about insuring your wedding rings.
How To Choose A Wedding Band To Suit Your Engagement Ring

“The rate is determined by several rating variables and factors (such as auto or home policy) to provide a customized rate based on individual risk characteristics,” notes Krowiorz. The cost of coverage varies greatly depending on a number of factors, including the value of your ring, where you live (and theft rates in the area), and whether or not your policy has a deductible. The premium will always be higher for policies with a low or no deductible.
Krowiorz says that the cost of insurance is usually 1 to 3 percent of the value of the item insured, but can be outside this range depending on individual risk characteristics. So, on average, you can expect to pay $1 to $3 for every $100 your ring is worth. In theory, you can estimate a premium of $100 to $300 per year for a $10,000 bubble.
Your soon-to-be fiancé or fiancée can insure the ring as soon as it’s purchased and in their possession – just like you insure a car before driving it. You may not initially fear anything happening to your precious and sentimental sign, but the sooner it is secured, the sooner you will be protected. Once purchased, you or your partner can begin shopping for ring insurance providers. Krawiorz notes that the timeline can vary depending on the individual case. Coverage may be provided immediately (upon submission of application, appraisal and sales receipts) or may take a few business days subject to underwriting review.
The 9 Times To Take Off Your Engagement Ring & Why
When it comes to securing your engagement ring (or any other valuable piece, for that matter), you have two options. If you have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, you can purchase an extension (also called a rider) that specifically covers your engagement ring. But, something to remember. “A jewelry claim filed against your homeowner’s policy can affect your entire policy,” Krowiorz notes. “Therefore, if your engagement ring is ever stolen or lost, your premiums may increase or your eligibility for your entire homeowner’s policy at renewal may be affected.”
If you don’t have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, you can take out a policy through an independent company that specializes in jewelry insurance, such as Jewelers Mutual. “We encourage you to trust your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance expertise and your jewelry,” says Krowiorz. Independent companies like this one are also worth looking into if your wedding ring insurance provider doesn’t offer the specific coverage you need. “Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover jewelry to some extent, but, in many cases, coverage is limited by covered conditions, requirements to use jewelry replacement companies, and coverage value limits,” Krowierz explains.
