Steampunk Ideas
Steampunk Ideas – If you’re looking for unique pieces and items that you can repurpose, you can DIY steampunk clothing! The amazing thing about steampunk style is that it often takes pieces that are ugly and turns them into treasures. We found this to be true many times when we dressed up in steampunk for Halloween!
Every year the whole family goes to an exhibition or a treat. Unfortunately, last year was 2020 and we didn’t have our usual trunk or treat, so we set up some steampunk fantasy on our trip. We were all dressed up, even my husband who suffered for a long time. Thrift store shopping has been my go-to source for all of our costume needs, and I tell you how we put together our thrift store steampunks below, outfit by outfit. I’ll even take a look at our candy delivery system, affectionately called “steam punkin” at the end of the post.

You can easily save 75% off a steam punk outfit at the thrift store. For both sexes, really, but here’s what to look for in a woman’s outfit.

Think Victorian era colors in a color palette of black, brown, maroon and dark green. If it’s a little fun, it might work. For our outfit, I got a long black floor length skirt that was a bit too formal for me. I got a calf length brown onesie for my daughter. It’s probably a bit more modern than it should be, but it worked really well with the overall outfit.
Sorry for not having better pictures here, I really couldn’t take pictures of the outfits for the classes!
With really long dresses, you can play with them a bit. Try tucking in one or both sides of the dress with a hem and a hem to show off some leg… or just leave it on the floor!
Sounds crazy, right? Listen to me. I really like my clothes. I looked around Amazon for one already made (like this one) but they were pretty expensive.
Steampunk Costumes For Women
The exact same look was pulled off with a pair of curtains on a ribbon that I tied around the waist. Just for reference, these fenders are the shape I used for my starting car.
I used a shirt dresser to add to the mix, but you can use a willing friend! I tucked the long part of the curtain under a few times, then sewed a quick stitch or two to keep the material in place and secure. The valance went around the sides to meet back up to the center, and the combined material made a perfect mess at the split. And it only cost me $3!
Shows that it’s always worth looking at materials differently to get the job done.
Can you wear pants with your feminine clothes? Unlimited. Think slim, leggings are great. Stripes and the same muted colors are great! Pants will look amazing when you put on a great pair of shoes.

Browse the racks for rustic blouses and tops with pleated skirts or dresses in a beautiful palette of cheerful colors. Something with a very high neck would be great too! If you are looking for some inspiration think Victorian times.
Corsets are great in steampunk clothing, which was the only major purchase we made on Amazon. You can find one with good quality clothing for about $30-$35. When we were looking for our shirts at the thrift store, we kept in mind what would be seen on top of the corsage!
PRO TYPE: LEATHER. What you should really look for at the thrift store when looking for a steampunk outfit are cool leather belts. Put them together or make them into bandoliers or gun holders. Fine leather can be expensive to source as a raw material, so spending a buck or two on a pre-cut strap is great! Leather belts
Leather belts are a wonderful polish to steampunk outfits. The clothes are really about the small interesting details. A well-fitted belt will tie the whole outfit together. I put a thick wide belt around my waist – it was meant to make a little pouch to hang from, but I never got around to it. My daughter started with two belts, one of which I embellished a bit, but when it came to photos, the pieces of clothing were thrown to the wind.

Of course, steampunk flowers would be a hard thing to find just at the thrift store. There’s also the whole issue of used flowers which can feel a little strange. BUT for the past two years our local Goodwill stores have had steampunk columns that were brand new with shopping tags. Can you do this yourself? Yes, but for twelve dollars it wasn’t worth the time to get the ingredients.
Of course, Amazon is always a good source for steampunk costumes, but I’ve seen some recently at Party City and even Walmart for cheaper during Halloween, if you have one near you.
As I mentioned before, a good steampunk outfit is all about the little details, so you’ll want accessories. That being said, there were some inexpensive jewelry that worked for my costume and cut down on my crafting time, but you could probably pick up some beads from the thrift store (or hardware store) and glue them to a string to make a bow. . Banding leather around pieces of leather or lace quickly and easily makes large boats. If you’re interested in accessories, here are some that I thought were really cool, but blew my budget by the time I got to this part:
For her accessories, my daughter wanted to make her a jetpack two days before Halloween. So I … made of EVA foam and gently based on the pattern from Lost Wax. She wore it for this photo…and then didn’t wear it until the evening. ((Sighs.)) What she brought was a lace fan I found at Goodwill for $2, but if you’re unlucky enough not to come across it, there’s always Amazon.

If you google “steampunk clothing” you will find a million and five products on them. For my husband I was just looking for something that he would be comfortable with. What to look for in menswear:
Not too hard or complicated to find. Again, use moody colors and lots of lines. I couldn’t find a vest in my hunt that worked with his size or outfit, so I bought a duplicate vest on Amazon. The goal was one big purchase ($30) for the dress, and we managed it with all the other great finds.
As for the steampunk hat he’s wearing… We’ve had a black ball cap for a few years now. I made it into a snowsuit for a Christmas card and have had it ever since. He is seriously the most tolerant man on the planet. I picked up a bunch of steampunk goggles
I had a request from my dear husband to get the clothing collaboration. That I turn him into a booze bandolier. I have no idea how to tell you to make one of your own…it was a lot of trial and error to get something that worked the way I wanted. It’s made from pieces of leather sewn together and a couple of those $2 belts from the thrift store. As a bonus, I made a leather beer holster to add to his side belt. He was very happy to be dressed for the evening and we certainly had a good laugh about it.

Another very popular staple in steampunk clothing are nerf guns that have been modified into crazy steampunk weapons. There’s a bit of imagination in what the guns actually do (fire a sleep blast?), but it has nothing to do with coolness. Something that is fun. Here’s a tutorial that shows you how to modify a nerf gun like this, but there are plenty of other examples if you look around.
My son’s request to be a steampunk plague doctor for Halloween negated my experience in steampunk. As I learned, I discovered amazing things and new ways to create things. The EVA foam was a remarkable discovery. They are made of yoga mats and craft foams. It’s not exactly a thrift store, but there was a lot of treasure trove involved in the production of the clothing…and really, the EVA mechanical foam parts are the first thing you’ll notice about the children’s clothing.
